The Role:

  • An exciting opportunity is available to join the Clinical Forensic Medicine team at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM).
  • The Forensic Medical Officer position offers a chance to work in a dynamic environment with access to academic activities, courtesy of the on-site Monash University Department of Forensic Medicine, alongside various other VIFM forensic practitioners such as forensic anthropologists, forensic toxicologists, molecular biology scientists, and forensic dentists.
  • Responsibilities include delivering and coordinating forensic services to alleged victims and perpetrators of crime to support justice services in Victoria. These services are provided to various Justice agencies in Melbourne and regional Victoria.
  • This role is tailored for medical officers interested in pursuing a career in clinical forensic medicine (CFM) without the need to complete the specialist CFM Physician pathway through the RCPA training program.
  • Collaboration with health care and social welfare service providers to facilitate care services, as well as the opportunity to supervise junior doctors and nurses and provide educational support, are integral parts of the position.
  • Primarily based in metropolitan Melbourne, this role plays a vital part in ensuring a high standard of forensic medical services for Victoria.

  • The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) plays a crucial role in providing independent forensic medical and scientific expertise to the justice system, tissue for transplantation, and conducting research for the benefit of the community.
  • VIFM's work supports safe convictions, appropriate acquittals, investigates deaths reported to the Coroner, examines alleged offenders, medically assesses and supports crime victims, and operates the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria (DTBV) providing tissues for transplantation and medical research.
  • The Institute's research contributes to public health and safety and the proper functioning of the legal system. Professional development initiatives ensure a high standard of forensic medical services for Victoria.

Our Working Relationships:

  • VIFM collaborates with various sectors of the community, primarily Victoria Police, the courts, and the Coroners Court of Victoria to deliver clinical forensic medical services and toxicology testing. Partnerships with other entities such as universities, legal and medical professionals, and hospitals play a pivotal role in the Institute's operations.

Requirements:

  • MBBS degree.
  • General and/or Specialist registration as a medical practitioner by AHPRA or eligibility to obtain such registration.
  • Minimum of 2 years postgraduate medical experience.
  • Varied medical experience including emergency medicine, primary care, paediatrics, gynaecology, psychiatry, addiction medicine, and sexual health.
  • Previous exposure to clinical forensic medicine is advantageous.
