NFSA's purpose is to tell the national story in all its rich diversity by collecting, preserving and sharing audiovisual media, via the cultural experience platforms of our time.

In 2021, items from the collection were viewed more than 121 million times across the country, making it one of the nation's most vital and utilised cultural resources.


The institution is investing in a comprehensive digital transformation program, during which more of the items in our care will be digitised for preservation and once digitised, become more readily searchable and accessible by all Australians.

A core component of the transformation program will be building national audiences for the collection through improved online services and content offerings that will be brought alive through a compelling, relevant and dynamic institutional voice.


About the position
This position is within the Access section's Rights and Distribution team, located in the Sydney (Pyrmont) office.

The position will involve significant interaction with other NFSA teams particularly members of the Access Services, Curatorial and Communication & Marketing teams.


Under limited direction undertake the following duties:

  • Lead, develop, promote and support the day-to-day functions of the Rights and Distribution team.
  • Manage the NFSA's collective licensing programs.
  • Identify, develop, and manage internal projects that deliver an increase in the access and reuse of the NFSA's collection by internal and external clients.
  • Work with Team Leads to identify ways to streamline internal requests, develop training and support documentation, increase reach of NFSA owned materials and look for relevant commercial opportunities to assist in achieving this.
  • Provide ongoing high level written and oral advice to Senior Manager, Access on issues relating to copyright compliance, risk assessment and verification of complex rights matters. You will also assist with interpreting the latest developments in copyright legislation applicable to the reuse of the national collection.
  • Develop and oversee NFSA staff training to increase knowledge of copyright compliance and NFSA's legal obligations under the Copyright Act.
  • Represent the NFSA and liaise with relevant professional organisations engaged in licensing, distribution and rights management for cultural collections.

  • Ability to motivate, coordinate, lead and supervise the work of a small team responsible for providing timely and effective expert advice to a range of internal clients.
  • High level experience and understanding of licensing practices and rights management of an audiovisual archive and related document and artefact collection in accordance with Australian copyright law.
  • Establishment and management of ongoing productive relationships with peers and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the commercial environments that facilitate sharing of NFSA owned audiovisual materials.
  • Development, interpretation, implementation and modification of licensing and rights management policies and procedures.
  • Utilisation of effective negotiation, influencing and professional written and oral communication skills to confidently articulate and achieve desired outcomes with strong client focus and excellent analytical and problemsolving skills.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Extensive demonstrated experience in licensing, distribution or rights management for a cultural institution, film production company and or television broadcaster.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a field relevant to the work of the NFSA and/or the position.

Security Clearance Requirements:

  • This position requires an Australian Federal Police check to be conducted.
  • Obtain and maintain an Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance
