At Hobsons Bay City Council the safety of our people is paramount in all that we do.

To support and deliver on this goal, we're looking for an experienced and suitably qualified Occupational Health and Safety Specialist to lead the health and safety function.


In this role you will be responsible for leading the health and safety team in the deployment of effective workplace health and safety services across all areas of Council, including injury management, workers compensation, management of the occupational health and safety committees and the occupational health and safety program.

The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist is also a key member of the People & Culture leadership team and plays an integral role in the implementation of Council's Occupational Health and Safety strategy and programs.


What you will be doing?:

  • Leading a passionate Health and Safety team.
  • Providing advice and support to senior leaders and workgroup leaders to ensure compliance to legislation, regulations and codes of practice are maintained.
  • Coordinating and championing the execution of our Occupational Health and Safety Strategic Plan.
  • Supporting the coordination of Councils incident & hazard reporting, management of change and investigation processes.
  • Ensuring hazards and unsafe working conditions or practices have been identified, reported, and actioned. Monitor actions to ensure risks are eliminated, isolated or minimised.
  • Coordinating and facilitating the Health and Safety Committees.
  • Managing the ReturntoWork program, including management of cases from incident to full RTW.
  • Providing training, mentoring and guidance to Health and Safety Rep's and key frontline leaders responsible for providing a safe workplace.
  • Supporting the wider People & Culture team to create an inclusive, respectful & collaborative work environment.

What we are looking for:

  • Previous experience in a similar role, or experience and qualifications to step up into a lead role
  • OHS qualifications
  • Solid working knowledge of the OHS Act and regulations.
