ABOUT US

Alfred Child & Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) is one component of the Department of Mental & Addiction Health at Alfred Health.

We are a community-based service providing comprehensive assessment, treatment and case management to infants, children, adolescents and young people up to the age of 25 years of age presenting with behavioural, emotional, psychiatric or developmental difficulties.

CYMHS provides clinical services in partnership with a wide range of service providers to achieve the best possible outcomes. Alfred CYMHS is committed to active participation by families and young people in evaluating and improving our services.

Child and Youth (CY) HOPE
CY HOPE is a program within CYMHS that supports children and young people at a risk of suicide.

The program provides rapid and intensive form of support to the young person as well as their support networks through prevention and intervention.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

As a Youth Peer Support Worker, you will draw from your own lived and/or living experience of mental health challenges to act as a recovery champion within the Alfred Health Youth Program team, specifically working alongside the Child & Youth HOPE program.

In this role, you will be responsible for providing one-to-one support to young people.
Please note this is not a clinical role.
As a Youth Peer Support worker, you will also work with and alongside the HOPE clinicians. Whilst Youth Peer Support Workers are not clinicians, they are as much a valued part of our team. Our Youth Peer Workers have a key responsibility to help inform our service design and delivery.

In this context, sharing insights that are drawn from your own lived experience may be really important in enabling another staff member or team to develop an understanding of a person's experiences, or how we may be working and the potential impact of this on a young person's experience.

WHAT YOU'VE GOT

  • Lived experience of mental health challenges as a young person and experience of utilising mental health services in your own recovery (essential Key Selection Criteria)
  • Prior experience working as a peer support worker (essential)
  • Recognition and understanding of your own personal recovery process (including tools and strategies) and the ability to use this to appropriately share your story with purpose to support others (essential)
  • Confidence to advocate for yourself and young people in a clinical environment
  • Australian working rights
  • Current Victorian Driver License
  • Current Working with Children Check or willing to obtain one, and be willing to undergo a Background Check

WHAT YOU'LL GET

  • Relevant training (e.g. Peer Support, group facilitation, Open Dialogue)
  • Regular peer supervision and line management supervision
  • Support from the Youth Program team dedicated to promoting the voice of lived experience

OTHER BENEFITS

  • Access to salary packaging, discounted health insurance and banking
  • Great worklife balance
  • Located close to public transport, shops and restaurants
