The opportunity:

Join our innovative team at Visy's Operational Excellence division, where we are at the forefront of food safety and packaging technology. We are currently seeking a skilled Food Technologist to support our Food Can Division and contribute to our commitment to excellence.

Reporting to the Primary Laboratory Manager, the Food Technologist will be instrumental in the smooth operation of food can testing and packaging analysis. This role is pivotal in ensuring the integrity and safety of our food packaging solutions.

Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Conduct and oversee shelf-life study programmes, ensuring timely delivery of results and recommendations.
  • Evaluate the compatibility of tin plate/steel cans with commercially filled food stuffs.
  • Perform measurements of pH, vacuum levels, and visual corrosion evaluations.
  • Prepare samples for external laboratory analysis to determine tin and iron levels.
  • Support the Food Can Technical Manager with trial support, technical understanding, and post-trial evaluations.
  • Assist in microbiological testing and related investigations.
  • Ensure leak testing and other physical tests are conducted properly and reported on time.
  • Set up can closers in the Retort Laboratory for various divisional needs.
  • Suggest improvements and develop new experimental methods and testing procedures.
  • Provide technical support and advice in collaboration with the Food Can Technology Divisional Manager.
  • Maintain familiarity with production sites and technical contacts.
  • Uphold a safe working environment through proper housekeeping and adherence to 5S principles.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders across all divisions.
  • Liaise with packaging sites and internal customers to clarify work requests and advise on testing.
  • Review and issue test reports, ensuring full traceability of samples.
  • Conduct Triangular Taste Test panels as needed.

What you will bring to the team:

  • Tertiary qualification in Food Technology / Chemistry or related discipline.
  • Experience in food can testing or quality assurance packaging experience desirable.
  • Strong technical knowledge and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building and problem-solving skills.
