The Department

Position Objective
The Safety Advisor is responsible for compliance and management of health and safety across
Council's civil projects in accordance with ISO accreditation requirements. This role will also be key
to promoting healthy and safe working project sites in rural settings.

As a representative of Council, demonstrated professionalism and a commitment to a high level of
service and continuous improvement in the best interest of Council and the Community are essential.

Key Responsibilities

_Workplace Health & Safety _

  • Preparation and implementation of health and safety plans specific to each project
  • Complete risk assessments, spot audits, task observations and investigations across project
sites and report on findings, recommend areas for improvement and corrective actions

  • Ensure currency and availability of safety management system at project sites and specific
project plans as per legislation and contract requirements

  • Compile, complete and maintain records and evidence of compliance from project sites for audit
and legislative purposes

_Training _

  • In conjunction with the Safety Systems Manager, ensure employee licences, tickets and
qualifications are current and compliant to project specifications

  • Where qualified and competent, conduct Verification of Competency for mobile plant.

_Leadership & Management _

  • Monitor, review and report on operational output; service standards; and compliance with Council
policy and procedure

  • Lead and engage with stakeholders, role model, ensure communication is maintained and
roadblocks are removed where possible on projects

  • Provide constructive feedback to employees on projects regarding health and safety compliance
and understanding

  • Participate in personal development aimed to enhance own abilities and maintain up to date
knowledge regarding role and skills

_Governance _

  • Ensure compliance with finance and procurement policies is maintained
  • Development of, and delivering training on policies and processes across Council covering
section responsibilities

  • Coordinate and resolve service requests within acceptable timeframes as determined by
supervisor

  • Develop, implement and report on monitoring and evaluation of section programs and projects
  • Develop and manage registers and project plans including reporting on project deliverables
  • Develop, review and implement policies and procedures applicable to section activities which
are compliant to legislation and best practice

  • Develop and maintain current asset registers compliant to financial requirements of Council

_Stakeholder Engagement _

  • Develop effective relations with stakeholders, both internal and external ensuring positive
reflection on Council

  • Actively promote section and Council by participating in forums and meetings to raise awareness
of Council services, enhance networking across Flinders Shire while addressing community
concerns

_General _

  • Consistently complete allocated tasks to a high standard and within agreed timeframes
