SAHMRI Is located on the lands of Kaurna people who are the traditional custodians of Adelaide and the greater Adelaide region.

SAHMRI works with traditional custodians across South Australia, Australia and globally.

This role is required to collaborate with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on the lands of all traditional custodians across South Australia and potentially globally.


The Research Assistant/Project Officer will provide a professional level of research support to project(s) and research activities of the Aboriginal Families and Communities Health Research Alliance priority projects (ACRA).

This includes working within hospital setting(s) and recruiting participants for research projects.

The overall research is to assess the feasibility of support and care packages for Aboriginal pregnant mothers, Aboriginal babies, and their support person.


This position will be based at SAHMRI Women and Kids and will work across one or two maternity hospital sites (Women's and Children's Hospital and/or Lyell McEwin Hospital / or Flinders Medical Centre).

There may be requirement to travel between hospital and SAHMRI sites.

About the role

  • Research support to the Corka Bubs and ICARE projects.
  • Undertake research activities as directed, including recruitment and follow up of potential research participants.
  • Undertaking informed consent discussions with potential research participants.
  • Data collection and interviews of enrolled participants
  • Referring and supporting participants for the care package
  • Working respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations.
  • Participate in special projects within ACRA to continuously improve processes, tools, systems, and organisation.
  • Take reasonable care to protect own health, safety and welfare at work and avoid affecting the health and safety of any other person at work.
  • Work as an active, supportive, and reliable member of the ACRA team.
About You

  • Previous experience working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health/ Health Research, specifically maternal and women's and children's health (preferred).
  • Experience working in Aboriginal research projects.
  • Working alongside Aboriginal families and / or children.
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with ability to manage time and priorities effectively and use initiative.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a focus and commitment to assisting staff and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Experience using research digital tools and databases.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • A 'can do' attitude, friendly and motivated team member.
  • Support the SAHMRI commitment to reconciliation and acknowledge the importance of working in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Special Requirements

  • Some out of hours' work may be required.
  • DCSI Working with Children and Police Checks may be required.
  • Primarily located at SAHMRI Women and Kids (North Terrace), but travel to other SAHMRI sites including (and not limited to) Women's and Children's Hospital, Lyell McEwin Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre or other locations as directed.
  • All employees are required to be immunised in accordance with the requirements of the Hospital in which they are working or be willing to be vaccinated at the cost of the Institute.
