The National Library is one of several agencies within the Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and the Arts portfolio.
The role of the National Library of Australia role, as defined by the National Library Act 1960, is to ensure that documentary resources of national significance relating to Australia and the Australian people, as well as significant non-Australian library materials, are collected, preserved and made accessible either through the Library itself or through collaborative arrangements with other libraries and information providers.
The Library is the custodian of a rich collection reflecting the people and culture that shape Australia and Australians. We collect a wide range of physical and digital materials and includes more than 10 million items ranging from books and journals to more than 40,000 paintings, drawings and prints, more than 9,000 metres of manuscripts, 550,000 photographs, hundreds of thousands of maps, more than 50,000 oral history recordings and millions of archived websites.

These temporary vacancies can be full time, part time or, occasionally, casual (intermittent and varied hours). The work offered can be within:
Collections Management (eg. preservation, cataloguing, acquisitions, special collections management, curatorship, archivists), Library Services (eg. reference services, reading room floor, document supply services, collection retrieval, research), Digital and IT Services (eg. IT support and operations, Trove partnerships and liaison, digitisation, digital preservation, web development, graphic design), Indigenous Engagement (eg. supporting the National Library's indigenous engagement programs) Corporate services and administration (eg. finance, human resources, executive support, building management, records management), and Exhibitions and outreach (eg. education, marketing, editorial/publishing, exhibition installation).The roles available may be at APS2-6 classifications and Executive Level 1-2.
