ABOUT PICTURAE:


Picturae is a globally recognized digitisation specialist, focusing exclusively on museum collections, archives, herbaria, and libraries, striving to make cultural heritage and natural history data and images widely accessible to scientists, the public, and beyond.


GOALS OF THE POSITION:

Picturae is looking to hire two Digitisation Specialists to join our second herbarium project in Canberra. As a Digitisation Technician, you are responsible for imaging several hundred thousand herbarium specimens according to project specifications.

All materials will be carefully and efficiently placed on the digitisation set, continuous quality checks will be performed, and daily production goals will be met.

Together with your local team, you will make this one-of-a-kind biodiversity collection digitally accessible worldwide to support scientific research and advancement.


You will perform high-speed digitisation operations for a large natural history collection located in Canberra over a period of 8 to 12 months.

Specimens will be treated according to collection standards at all times and you will support regular communication with your offsite international team members.


For this position, you will be hired through a third-party hiring agency while receiving and following all assignments from Picturae.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operating proprietary imaging equipment and software.
  • Handling botanical specimens according to protocol.
  • Performing continuous and concurrent quality checks.
  • Maintaining consistently highpaced throughput rates.
  • Maintaining high quality of work under mínimal supervision.
  • Ensuring daily production goals are met.
  • Performing daily equipment calibrations.
  • Resolving workflow queries with colleagues onsite and abroad.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the digitisation room.
  • Assisting new staff members during training.
  • Logging working hours in Picturae and recruitment agency databases.
  • Reporting daily progress to the Team Leader.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High degree of manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to stand while working for the entire project duration.
  • Ability to maintain repetitive workflow motions.
  • Ability to navigate hardware and software to assess quality.
  • Identify and resolve potential workflow issues.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND INFORMATION:

  • Preferred: Degree and/or equivalent professional experience in Photography/Library Science/Biological Sciences/Art History/Archiving/Humanities/Related Fields
  • English language requirement: Professional fluency
  • Training sessions will be discussed and planned separately.
