The National Research Collections Australia (NRCA) are a vital resource for conservation and science.

The collections underpin research in agriculture, biosecurity, biodiversity and climate change and are used by researchers all over the world.

The Environomics Future Science Platform is using genomics, bioinformatics and nanotechnologies, to reinvent how we measure and monitor ecosystem health, change and threats, and find new resources in nature.


As the Research Projects Officer - Algae Culture and Genomics with the NRCA, you will join the team at the Australian National Algae Culture Collection (ANACC).

You will contribute to the curation, physiological maintenance and strain characterization of ANACC algae strains and ancillary copepod cultures, and provide technical genomics expertise to the multiomics research undertaken in the Environomics Future Science Platform (FSP).


In this role you will:

Design and perform straightforward experiments, routine laboratory analyses, and design new processes or apparatus.
Design data recording and entry systems.
Conduct literature reviews, investigations and inspections in the field or laboratory including associated analysis.
Perform some non-routine analyses or technology development activities.
Schedule operations within the work team's plan.
Independently test possible solutions to resolve identified problems.
Oversee the activities of less experienced staff and provide guidance on experimental/ technological techniques and protocols as required.
Respond courteously and efficiently to client requests, through the Australian National Algae Supply Service.

Salary:
AU$68k - AU$86k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
A relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience in phycology and algae collection management.
Proficiency in aseptic microbiological techniques.
Experience in management and feeding of living copepod cultures.
Experience using a range of software for documenting and analysing experimental data.
Experience with DNA sequence analysis, including familiarity with phylogenetics and bacterial genome assembly using bash scripting and HPC.
