This User Experience Designer position will focus on driving a co-design approach in an exciting strategic program of work called Reinvent Science - finding ways to revolutionise science through digital technologies.

This program requires designers with a unique skillset of collaborating with scientists to roadmap and design long-term future digital scenarios as well as to rapidly take successful proofs of concepts through to prototypes and implementations to be tested on real scientific problems, inventing novel multi-modal interaction techniques to solve new problems using emerging technologies such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality, gestural and haptic systems.


The User Experience Designer will join the User Experience team in Data61's Product & Design Group who work across a range of projects within transdisciplinary teams comprising of scientists, engineers, product managers, and Business Development and Commercialisation specialists who design, develop and deliver impactful science and technology into a range of domains.

Through presentations, blogs and practical demonstration, the role will also facilitate the educating of CSIRO staff and the innovation ecosystem on good user experience practise, and continuously improving the team's capability via transfer of knowledge and experience-based learning.


This is an exciting, innovative program and we are looking for passionate designers with an interest in speculative design approaches and methodologies that can take a complex idea and transform it into both a tangible vision of the future and an intuitive, easy-to-use product that customers love.


Your duties will include:

  • The ability to operate in ambiguous and uncertain contexts, collaborating across disciplines to solve the complex problems of current state and experimenting with speculative design approaches to arrive at solutions for future state.
  • Confident and competent operating across every part of the end to end UX process, ie: from discovery to ideation, through to prototyping and implementation, iteratively validating with users at each stage:
  • Undertake discovery activities to extract an early understanding of project requirements including problem/opportunity, user definitions and value propositions.
  • Plan, run and report on customer and user research engaging with users/customers and conducting any related research activities, then converting insights into product requirements that can inform solution exploration and development.
  • Ideate and refine solution designs to describe workflows, information architecture, concept sketches and wireframes, user interface and interaction designs, ensuring work is implementable to a professional quality level.
  • Plan and execute usability testing for both concept designs and working prototypes/products.
  • Experiment with and invent new approaches to interactive 4D design using established and emerging technologies (mixed and augmented reality, motion design, multimodal interaction).
  • Work collaboratively with a range of different disciplines across both CSIRO internally and with external partners to ensure that identified goals are achieved, both on a project level and an organisational level.

To be considered you will need:

  • Relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant work experience in a related design discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years' relevant professional career experience as a 'generalist' user experience practitioner and handson commercial or applied experience, with a portfolio of work demonstrating proven expertise and skills in user experience design and case studies describing the individual contribution and process followed.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead both early and midstage user research (e.g. contextual interviews, usability testing, etc) and to take a disciplined approach to the capturing and communication of insights (e.g. affinity mapping, user personas, customer experience mapping, etc).
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver a range of highly inventive low and highfidelity solution designs for testing with users, and subsequent implementation with prototype or development teams.
