Belmont District Hospital is inviting applications from General Practitioners with the suitable qualifications and experience to work as Visiting Medical Officers to provide emergency department service ensuring optimal medical care to the patients of Belmont District Hospital during night shifts.

About the role:
Visiting Medical Officers in General Practice will provide high quality, evidence based, patient focussed management and care to Emergency Department patients, families and carers through the participation whilst on shift at Belmont Emergency Department.

Providing basic and advanced resuscitation, management of presenting patients and facilitate where necessary, the appropriate referral of patients to other agencies, hospitals or institutions.

Managing acute medical emergencies such as myocardial infarction, pulmonary oedema and diabetic ketoacidosis with appropriate advice and consultation with a comprehensive set of guidelines and policies to direct practice.

You will be supported when requested from on-call FACEM, retrieval or other specialists along with an experienced and dedicated nursing and multidisciplinary team.

Belmont Hospital is located within the beautiful Lake Macquarie area, surrounded by beautiful views, great restaurants, excellent parks, perfect for weekends with family and friends. Just down the road you will find some of the most stunning beaches in NSW. There is proximity to the bustling city of Newcastle , and a quick drive to the Hunter Valley vineyards and surrounding areas.

Belmont Hospital Emergency Department is staffed with a small, closely knit group of FACEMs who work together with the wider emergency team to ensure excellent service provision is provided to the Lake Macquarie community. The department sees approximately 29,000 attendances per annum with an admission rate of approximately 14%. There is a strong representation of aged patients at the Belmont ED however the department serves all age groups with around 14% paediatric presentations.

Patients admitted to Belmont Hospital through the emergency department present with acute general medical, general cardiology problems, or acute general surgery. Belmont is supported and works closely alongside the John Hunter Hospital as the tertiary referral service for acute specialty services, including paediatric care. The Emergency Department team consists of Staff Specialists, Career Medical Officers, Senior Resident Medical Officers, PGY2 doctors and PGY1 doctors, nursing staff, nurse practitioners, ACE nurses, technical assistants, administration, and HSAs. The department embraces this dynamic team environment and supports all staff through opportunities for education, research, and maintaining a good work/life balance.

There is on site pathology and imaging from 7.30am – 11.30pm each day with afterhours imaging and pathology is supported by the John Hunter Hospital.

Some requirements of the role:

  • General Practice Specialist registration with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
  • Demonstrated recent and comprehensive experience in General Practice and Emergency Medicine.
  • Completion of, or currently undertaking a course relevant to Emergency Medicine
  • Have a commitment to patient safety
  • Consult with medical and other health professionals
  • Assist the ED Coordinator in providing efficient safe patient flow through the Emergency Department
