The Department


The Allied Health Professional Practice Framework underpins the work of Allied Health at Alfred Health in contributing to Alfred Health's purpose.

The Orthoptists play an integral role in providing clinical support to the Ophthalmology, and Neuro Ophthalmology services, operating in close physical and functional association with the Units.

Assessment and management are provided for chronic ocular disease, ocular motility disorders, visual field and colour analysis and biophysical measurements.


The Position Summary
To provide an exceptional level of service in Orthoptics, within the ophthalmology outpatient clinic, Alfred Health. The Grade 2 Orthoptist is responsible for the ongoing development and provision of Orthoptic services to the


Alfred Health Ophthalmology outpatient Clinics include; general ophthalmology clinics and our specialised Medical Retina, Glaucoma, Pre and Postoperative Cataract clinics and our recently created Orthoptic led Glaucoma Monitoring Clinic (GMC).

The Grade 2 Orthoptist is also responsible for the education of Orthoptic students and contributing to the supervision and professional development of Grade 1 Orthoptic staff.


Qualifications/Experience Required

  • Bachelor of Orthoptics or equivalent
  • Bachelor of Orthoptics & Ophthalmic Science (or equivalent)
  • Registered Member with the Australian Orthoptic Board (AOB)

_Desirable _:

  • Desirable
  • Registered Member with the Orthoptic Association of Australia (OAA)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in Orthoptics and ophthalmic assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently, as well as alongside ophthalmologists, nurses and optometrists
