About the Role

Reporting to the Head of Sustainability, this position is responsible for playing a pivotal role in advancing Sandfire's decarbonization agenda and ensuring compliance with climate regulations. Collaborating with functional technical roles in Environment and Social performance, this position will also lead climate resilience planning and will drive strategic thinking and initiatives in line with Sandfire's business objectives

Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to):

Strategy and Execution

  • Manage and provide subject matter expertise on climate science, policy, regulation, decarbonization, climate related risks and opportunities and scenario analysis.
  • Support the Group decarbonisation efforts and program of activity to achieve net zero by 2050 and interim targets including decarbonisation roadmap modelling, forecasting and planning
  • Provide technical expert advice and guidance on climate change issues, regulation, and policy in all operating jurisdictions.
  • Provide technical support on integration and penetration of low carbon technologies as well as market-based mechanisms in support of decarbonization.
  • Lead, support and coordinate identification of climate related risks and opportunities and climate resilience and adaptation planning for projects and operating assets
  • Actively contribute to improving the companies position on climate change and meeting publicly disclosed targets
  • Contribute to managing risk and supporting performance in cross-cutting and interconnected sustainability areas such as but not limited to human rights, water and nature.
  • Identify and initiate projects within the business to manage climate related risks and opportunities and further the company purpose and strategy
  • Represent Sandfire at climate related external forums and Industry association working groups and task teams

Reporting and Benchmarking

  • Manage companywide energy and emissions data and accounting including digital solutions and tools
  • Collaborate with finance as joint lead to draft and seek approval of all Climate Related Financial disclosures.
  • Lead the corporate response to other climate disclosure such as Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures and CSRD
  • Contribute to climate change aspects of the Annual and Sustainability Report and any other required annual disclosure.
  • Prepare briefing materials for risk committees, Executive Team and the Board on climate change matters and updates
  • Support disclosure on climate related data for investors, and ESG rating agencies

About You

  • A tertiary degree in environmental sciences or economics, or related fields
  • 7+ years of experience within sustainability related roles
  • Strong understanding of climate change science, climate transition scenarios, net zero emission strategies and low carbon transition financial mechanisms
  • Experience in GHG accounting or energy management
  • Strong understanding of reporting regimes and standards such as NGERS or GHG Protocol
  • Ability to apply ESG principles to the mining industry.
  • Experience with drafting public disclosure requirements in Australia
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively engaging with all levels of business including Boards.
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office suite of products.
