Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Queensland Treasury Corporation Full time
Senior Associate & Associate, Sustainability

Join an organisation that has been recognised as 'one of Australia's best places to work', winning multiple Employer of Choice awards in recent years for professional development, employee benefits and culture.

QTC is the central financing authority for the Queensland Government and provides financial resources and services for the State. We manage the State's funding program in the global capital markets to deliver sustainable and cost-effective borrowings for the Queensland Government, local governments, and other related entities (our clients).

With a statutory role to advance the financial interests and development of the State, we help to deliver innovative, long-term solutions that contribute to the growth of Queensland's economy. We protect Queensland's financial interests and deliver better financial outcomes by centralising the management of our clients' borrowings, cash investments, and foreign exchange.

Purpose of Role

QTC's Advisory Division is focused on supporting financial sustainability and operational excellence across Queensland's Government Departments, Local Governments and Government Owned Corporations. The Advisory Division supports and assists these Government entities to:

  • deliver their budgets
  • improve their client service delivery
  • identify and mitigate significant business risk, and
  • implement and sustain projects while building internal capability.

QTC'S Advisory Division contributes to client projects that create meaningful solutions with profound outcomes. Our work addresses challenges of today, with results for tomorrow, striving to improve Queensland for generations to come.

We are looking for values-driven Senior Associates and Associates to join our growing Sustainability Team, part of the broader Industry, Investment and Commercial Team. The Sustainability Team aspires to be a trusted advisor to Government, playing a crucial role in supporting Queensland's transition to a low carbon economy. The team primarily partners with Central Agencies, working closely with Queensland Treasury, on engagements requiring multi-agency collaboration with whole of state impacts. The support provided by the Team includes providing analysis, insights, and strategies in diagnosing and solving challenges or progressing opportunities.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the preparation and presentation of industry, financial and economic advice to inform Queensland's pathway to net zero and provide insight into the cost of abatement and the structural challenges emerging from the transition to a low carbon economy, including implications for industry, government and the economy.
  • Undertake financial and/or data modelling and analysis to support and inform problem solving and decision making.
  • Support the development of reporting to measure and track the status of Queensland's emissions reduction progress.
  • Stay informed about trends in sustainability and support the identification of implications and opportunities for Queensland.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in decarbonisation technologies and bring innovative ideas to support strategic growth.
  • Collaborate within the team to scope and develop projects for the Sustainability portfolio.
  • Lead and/or contribute to project workstream delivery with a focus on outcomes and impact.
  • Develop and manage peer stakeholder relationships, including building trust with internal stakeholders and external clients.
  • Contribute to the Team, Group, Division and Corporate KPIs.
  • Demonstrate capacity across a broad spectrum of skills needed for business success.
  • Travel within Australia may be required to fulfil the requirements of this role.
  • Ability to take complex issues and present them in a clear and logical manner that gives the audience a critical understanding of the matter.
  • Understanding of Queensland's emissions profile and the State and Federal Government targets, policies and strategies as they relate to emissions reduction.
  • Strong financial, economic, industry and/or data modelling and analysis skills with high attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in research and reporting.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Personal drive and integrity and accepts accountability to deliver high quality work.
  • Ability to be discreet, maintain confidentiality, and recognise and respect sensitivities.
  • Intellectual and professional curiosity, including commitment to self-development, accepting coaching and stretch assignments.
  • Purpose driven and strong interest in sustainability.
  • Personal leadership consistent with QTC values and behaviours.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in a finance, economics, engineering, science, or related field

Experience

  • Minimum 2-5 years employment experience in roles that demonstrate overall competency.
  • Relationship management skills including the proven ability to develop partnerships with clients and internal teams.
  • Excellent report writing, financial analysis and presentation skills.
  • Engaging and persuasive communication style.
  • Critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills, including demonstrated ability to effectively diagnose situations and develop creative solutions.
  • Experience within financial services, resources, industry, agriculture and land, transport or renewable energy.
  • Experience in evaluating emission reduction and decarbonisation initiatives (energy, climate or emissions modelling experience well regarded).
