About the role

Peer workers use the experience of their recovery journey to support people with mental health issues, through peer support, positive role modelling, education, facilitating self-advocacy and providing information and opportunities to encourage participation in the public mental health system.

West Moreton Health acknowledges the nature of peer work often involves the sharing of personal lived experience in a way that is unique and may have dual relationships with the consumers, carers, and services they work for may be common, therefore WMH recognises the importance of the peer worker being offered reasonable adjustments as needed.

West Moreton Mental Health and Specialised Services (WMHSS) recognises the wellbeing of the workforce and has initiatives available to staff that include an Employee Assistance Program and a professional Peer Support Program.

The ideal applicant will be a person with a lived or living experience of accessing Mental Health Services (MHS) and has completed or working towards a certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, or equivalent and is someone who understands the unique challenges people face when engaging in mental health recovery.

People with a personal lived experience of MHS and have experience from the perspective of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander communities or are from a culturally and diverse background are encouraged to apply.

About you

  • Demonstrated knowledge of recovery principles and strengthbased approach in working with consumers who have mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated well developed communication skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain professional boundaries
  • Demonstrated skills in computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within timeframes and deliver on work commitments
  • Demonstrate an ability to advocate for the consumer perspective to identify service improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to share lived experience of recovery to assist consumers and staff within the role

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Vaccinated against, and remain vaccinated against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) as outlined in the Health Employment Directive NO. 01/1
  • Vaccinated against COVID19 as outlined in the Health Employment Directive NO.12/21and the Queensland Health Human Resources Policy B70.
  • Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld), there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to have a personal lived/living experience of mental health and/or substance use issues, or a personal lived/living experience of caring for a person with mental health and/or substance use issues
