Strategic Transport Lead

About the role:

Merri-bek City Council is looking to appoint their Strategic Transport Lead to join their team. Reporting directly to the Manager Transport, you will be responsible for leading the development of our updated transport strategy.

This is a fixed-term role to June 2025, with the possibility of further opportunities at the end of this term.

There's also an option for a 12-month secondment from another organization if that works better for you.

As the Strategic Transport Lead, you will have the opportunity to work with some great transport brains and courageous innovators while utilizing your transport knowledge, community engagement nous, and collaborative working style.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of land use and transport policy, focusing on successful delivery/implementation of land use and development policy and strategy.
  • Provide expert advice on transport planning for all networks, particularly bicycle, public transport, and pedestrian network planning.
  • Manage projects, including scoping, development, and implementation, team planning, and resource management ensuring delivery of outcomes within budget and agreed timeframes.
  • Liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts, including the capacity to deal with and resolve conflict.
  • Prepare project briefs and project manage project resources within the approved budgets and timelines.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in civil engineering, transport, urban planning, or related disciplines are essential.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience working at a senior level in the development and implementation of land use and transport policy, focusing on successful delivery/implementation of land use and development policy and strategy.
  • Knowledge and expertise in relation to transport planning for all networks and, in particular, bicycle, public transport, and pedestrian network planning.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including project scoping, development, and implementation, team planning, and resource management ensuring delivery of outcomes within budget and agreed timeframes.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts, including the capacity to deal with and resolve conflict.
  • Ability to prepare project briefs and project manage project resources within the approved budgets and timelines.
