Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade is part of the UK Government team in Australia. We support UK businesses to export to Australia, foster industrial partnerships and encourage investment in the UK.

The Defence, Infrastructure and Clean Energy team is responsible for the UK's international trade with the sectors heavily influenced by Government procurement and regulation.

The role will focus on market opportunities in Australia for UK companies in the emerging sectors of energy transition and clean growth across hydrogen, offshore wind, and energy from waste sectors.


This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and promote UK trade and investment in Australia.

The UK - Australia Free Trade and AUKUS agreements offer unprecedented opportunities to strengthen economic ties between our countries.

DBT brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment and help businesses succeed across the world.

You will join a high performing team of 40 trade and investment experts, working across five diplomatic missions in Australia.

You will also be an integral part of DBT's wider APAC region of over 200 people in 22 locations and the UK Government's Australia Network of over 130 people.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate across our networks on a range of trade and investment campaigns, soft power initiatives, trade missions and VIP visits.

The role holder will help develop our new strategy for this sector and will help establish the UK as a top tier trusted supplier and innovative thought leader at Federal and State level.


The role holder will help establish and will support senior level relationships across Government, industry, trade bodies and the broader eco-system.

They will proactively develop a pipeline of trade and investment opportunities, and will collaborate with International Trade Advisors, HQ and trade bodies to onboard and provide high quality advice to UK companies.

They will identify and work to remove trade access barriers.
The role holder will be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills. They will be able to proactively build trusted and impactful relationships with multiple stakeholders across government and within industry. They will be a confident communicator capable of exercising judgement and discretion with commercial in confidence data.

They will have commercial acumen, and will be able to quickly understand which opportunities offer value to UK companies, and will be confident using data to quickly and effectively prioritise their work.

They will be an effective team member, with a strong sense of collaboration and ability to bring diverse groups together.

They will also be able to operate autonomously and will have a strong degree of ownership of their sector.

The job holder will report to the Senior Trade Development Manager, Energy and Infrastructure and form part of a wider network at the Department for International Trade, the British Consulate General and the British High Commission in Canberra.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Understand the quickly evolving energy transition market, identifying commercial opportunities for UK companies and long-term trends.
  • Demonstrate high quality stakeholder management. Identify and build impactful relationships across the energy transition ecosystem that support UK business. These relationships will include Federal and State Government, trade bodies, industry and key market influencers.
  • Provide high quality advice to UK companies that supports them to grow their business in Australia.
  • Encourage Australian companies in the energy transition market to invest in the UK.
  • Shape the market to enable UK companies to succeed. Identify and work to remove market access barriers.
  • Work together across the UK Government teams in Australia, Asia-Pacific and the UK to build effective problems solving teams.
  • Support the delivery of events, trade missions and senior visits.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • A minimum of two years' work experience in business, ideally in an international & businessbusiness context, or in business development.
