Gastroenterology - Visiting Medical Officer

The Gastroenterologist will provide clinical management and treatment of patients within the Illawarra Shoalhaven
Local Health District under their care.

This care will be provided for within the scope of practice granted by the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

To provide consultation and procedural services in Gastroenterology.

The
VMO Gastroenterologist will be offered outpatient clinics, and/or procedure lists. As this is a leave relief position there is no ability to build a wait list.

The Gastroenterologist will need to communicate well with the consultant staff, verbally and digitally, and are welcome to attend the hospital's Gastroenterology multidisciplinary meetings.

The Gastroenterologist will provide expert medical assessment and management of patients within the Gastroenterology service in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD).


The Gastroenterology department is made up of 11 Gastroenterologists representing various subspecialties with Gastroenterology having assistance available at all times with the more difficult cases.

TWH Gastroenterology Dept has an Endoscopy room and clinic rooms within the department allowing for a centralised and more efficient service.


In addition, the Gastroenterologist will be responsible for the provision of specialist Gastroenterology services to emergency patients, inpatients and outpatients.

The Gastroenterologist will ensure provision of high-quality Gastroenterology services to all patients within the ISLHD and will proactively:

  • Support the development of Gastroenterology services
  • Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice
  • Support and develop Gastroenterology research within the department


The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) has responsibility for health services in the Illawarra Shoalhaven region - a catchment area extending along the coastline from Helensburgh in the north to North Durras in the south with over 400,000 residents.

This catchment covers four Local Government Areas (LGAs): Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven.

ISLHD operates eight hospital sites in Coledale, Bulli, Wollongong, Port Kembla, Shellharbour, Berry, Shoalhaven and Milton Ulladulla, and community health services operating from approximately 58 locations across the region.

ISLHD is one of the region's largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 staff.

Wollongong Hospital is the largest of Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District's eight hospitals, treating more than 48,000 patients annually. It is the region's tertiary referral hospital servicing a population of more than 400,000 people.

The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units.


An academic suite at Wollongong Hospital supports both the Graduate School of Medicine and School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Wollongong.

As such there are teaching and research opportunities through the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.
