ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Specialist skills and knowledge

  • Have a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of early childhood development and education.
  • Have sound knowledge of the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (2016)
  • Have a sound understanding of the Education and Care Services National Law Act 2010, and Education and Care Services National Regulations 201
  • Have the ability to develop, document and implement a developmentally appropriate education program for kindergarten children in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
  • The ability to plan, work and manage time effectively with mínimal supervision.

Interpersonal skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with parents, other staff and professionals.
  • Ability to work in a cooperative, flexible and professional manner with children, parents, and staff.
  • Well developed leadership and selfmotivation skills.
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality of information.

Role:

Specific responsibilities
Children

  • Develop, in consultation with children, families and educators, an educational program that is appropriate to the individual developmental needs and interests of the children. The program will be based on the Victorian Early Years Learning Development Framework and National Quality Framework, reflect the kindergarten's philosophy, policies and the needs of the community.
  • Regularly communicate the educational program to the families within the group.
  • Develop, record and maintain objectives for individual children, using the VEYLDF, based on regular written documented observations across all aspects of the child's development and share this information with the child's family as appropriate.
  • Link objectives for individual children into the program plan.
  • Provide a healthy, safe and welcoming environment and ensure that children are supervised at all times.
  • Discuss with relevant service staff, such as the educator, the educational program, needs of families and children attending the service so that they can carry out their duties effectively.
Parents

  • Actively encourage family involvement in developing and implementing the program at the kindergarten.
  • Provide regular information about the program, the operation of the service and child development for parents.
  • Ensure that new families are appropriately enrolled and orientated at the kindergarten.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with families and encourage their participation in and contribution to their child's education.
  • Provide meaningful information to families about their child's development and progress and ensure accurate records are maintained for each child
Staff

  • Work positively with other staff and provide supervision and support, where required within the organisational structure.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, other members of the profession and others in the community who contribute to the child's educational or developmental progress and wellbeing.
  • Attend regular staff meetings, to facilitate effective communication, internal staff development and discussion on management and programming for the service. The frequency of staff meetings will be determined by the Educational Leader, following consultation with the staff.
  • Provide leadership while working as a member of a cooperative team and encourage staff who are
involved in the program to contribute to the planning and implementation of the educational program.

  • Share housekeeping tasks of preparation, packing, hygiene, and safety related to the program, with
other staff.

  • Work cooperatively with the Person with Management and Control, administration staff and all educators to ensure the service operates in a safe work environment and that staff follow safe work practices.
  • Actively seek support and advice from the Educational Leader, peers and other early childhood professionals.
  • Keep abreast of current issues relating to children's services and liaise with relevant early childhood services and other professional services and organisations within the community.
  • Participate in an annual performance development review process.
  • Comply with the professional development requirements of VECTEA 201
  • Participate in the formal appraisal of staff for whom the position is responsible.
  • Adhere to all service OHS safety procedures.
