About the Vistorian Spinal Cord Service and Spinal Community Integration Service

The Victorian Spinal Cord Service (VSCS) is a specialised state-wide service that provides lifelong care to people who sustain a traumatic spinal cord injury in Victoria, Tasmania and southern New South Wales.

Inpatient services are provided at the Austin and Royal Talbot campuses of Austin Health. The VSCS also provides community and outpatient programs.

Spinal Community Integration Service (SCIS) is one part of the VSCS is based at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre but works with spinal cord injured clients from both Austin and Alfred Health who come from across Victoria.

It works with people to achieve the way they wish to live when they return home from hospital.

Usually this means working with the client, their family, workplace and therapists in various community places such as, in their own home, with a community service provider, in their local community, at their workplace, or in a recreation facility.

The peer support role also involves working with people while they are inpatients.
