The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to explore the world of biomedical research.

Students undertake a project which is part of the research program of a research laboratory, are supervised by a scientist and work alongside other research staff and students in the team.


A wide variety of projects are available to UROP students including those in basic biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, bioengineering and bioinformatics.

UROP offers biomedical research positions in wet and dry labs (such as in the fields of computational science, engineering and mathematics, among others) and a combination of both.

UROP is open
ONLY for Victorian undergraduate students who are interested in a career in
biomedical research.

We are looking for students who are interested in a career in biomedical research or clinical research and:

- are studying either:

- biology, biomedicine, chemistry and other related degrees
- mathematics or statistics
- biomedical/electrical/mechanical/materials engineering
- have skills in computer programming/computer science
- have the ability to manage time commitments between work and study and maintain a high standard of academic performance
- have the ability to work alone and with others.

Location:

Various host organisations in the Melbourne area (including Parkville and Clayton) and surrounds

Stipend/Salary:

approx. $35.2/hour

Tenure:
6 to 12 months, tenure to begin at the start of student's summer vacation. Students are also required to work during the semester at least
8 hours per week.

Eligibility:

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program is open to:

  • undergraduate students enrolled and placed at a Victorian tertiary institution
- students in the second or third year of their undergraduate course, with at least one full semester remaining at the start of their placement during the summer vacation
- students who are available to start work during their summer vacation and continue working at least 8 hours per week during the semester; and
- are Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or with an existing valid working rights for the duration of the term.

Please note, placements will be in various host biomedical research organisations (not necessarily CSIRO) in the Melbourne area and surrounds, and depending on the host organisation, provision of a valid working with children's check for employees may be required.
