About South Melbourne Market


The South Melbourne Market is a very important public place for social and cultural interaction both for the City of Port Phillip and the wider community.

Established in 1867, the Market is built on land made available under a Crown Grant for a general market. The buildings and associated infrastructure are owned and maintained by Council.


It is Council's intention to retain and enhance the Market's unique position as a major civic space, one that is a generator of community and social interaction, as well as being one of the Council's prime infrastructure assets.

Council is of the view that it can be developed further as a place for the whole community to visit and belong, as well as a premier shopping destination.


About the Role
City of Port Phillip is on the lookout for an Independent Committee Member to join the Committee.


The Committee is governed by a Charter which sets out the role of the Committee, describes its purpose, objective, functions, powers and composition.

A copy of the existing South Melbourne Market Committee Charter can be found here.


A South Melbourne Market Operating Agreement clearly outlines roles and responsibilities for matters more operational in nature that are not covered by the Charter.


Committee membership comprises two Councillors plus three independent members, one of whom is appointed by Council as the Chair of the Committee.


The Committee must meet at least six times per year on such dates and at such times and venues as agreed with the Chairperson.

To be considered for this important role, applicants should submit their resume and a maximum of two pages addressing the key selection criteria and demonstrated experience below:

  • Expertise and experience on Committees and/or Boards
  • Demonstrated commercial acumen in a relevant industry
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build and develop effective working relationships and manage effective relationships in a complex authorising environment
  • Demonstrated local connection to City of Port Phillip and passion for public markets
  • Alignment with SMM Strategic direction including commitment to driving customer experience and longterm financial sustainability of a vibrant community market
Council will also be looking for applicants to demonstrate their expertise in one or more of the areas described below:

  • public market management
- retail including fresh produce and / or general merchandising
- small to medium enterprise ownership / general management
- customer experience management
- strategic marketing and communications
- placemaking and public asset management
- advocacy and economic development

Security Requirements and Professional Obligations
Prior to a formal letter of offer, preferred applicants will be asked to provide:

  • Evidence of mandatory qualifications/registrations/licences
  • Sufficient proof of their right to work in Australia
  • Sufficient proof of their identity
  • Evidence of COVID19 Vaccination or valid medical exemption in line with City of Port Phillip Vaccination Policy
  • Complete a National Police Check completed via City of Port Phillip's Provider.
