This is an opportunity to join the Octopus Australia team in our Melbourne office. The successful applicant will be able to join the Octopus Investments Australia team on their mission to accelerate Australia's transition to a future powered by renewable energy.

Established in 2018, Octopus Australia is a dynamic multi-disciplinary team of over 50 highly skilled people which spans the expertise required to realise and operate a renewable energy and storage portfolio.

With an existing multi-GW portfolio of operating and development assets, including solar, wind and grid battery storage across the country. We are continuing to grow to create a long-term business that can deliver a firmed energy product to meet the evolving needs of Australia's energy future.

About the Role

We are looking for an Energy Markets Analyst to join our Energy Markets team, reporting to the Director of Energy Markets and Analytics at Octopus Australia. The location can be either Sydney or Melbourne. This person will have an important role shaping both the Octopus Australia portfolio as well as the energy transition in Australia.

You will be a forward-thinking person who is inquisitive in nature and is comfortable working in the detail and pivoting to a markets and portfolio view. Being part of a team to create an energy markets strategy and developing our suite of analytical products and forecasts. You will be someone who is passionate and is willing to learn all about the current and future state of the Australian energy market.

You will ideally have a minimum of three years industry experience in either an Energy Markets or Analytics team and have the ability to develop complex models and analyse the energy market to drive commercial outcomes for the business. Experience with energy forecasting platforms such as Plexos would be an advantage but more importantly is the willingness to learn how to develop and maintain such platforms.

Just as important as what you achieve in this role, is how you perform the role. We'll need you to be an engaged team member, who can cross pollenate your energy market knowledge and capabilities into an investment and development world with both internal and external stakeholders. Qualifications

Core responsibilities will include:

A diverse role that will include:

Building, maintaining, and running Plexos models to support Development and Investment decisions.

Model development and data analytics through core platforms i.e. Python, R, SQL and Power BI.

Analysis of market dynamics to understand and forecast commercial impacts.

You will work with other members of the energy markets team to deliver the analytical roadmap building a strong and robust data and modelling eco-system that will facilitate and enhance insights and modelling capabilities.

Play an integral role in the development of our Octopus view of the future energy market and produce meaningful analysis supports investment decisions and the creation of a future renewable portfolio.

Work collaboratively across the energy markets and Investment and development teams to assess new technology opportunities in the energy market and how these technologies will change the dynamics in the market, including hydrogen and electrification.

Core skills required:

  • Strong background in data analytics or data science - must have a love of data and a strong desire to continue to learn and work in the energy analytics industry.
  • Analytical proficiency with experience in coding language i.e. Python, R, and Data Analytics technologies such as SQL or Power BI.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to consider complex market challenges in a broader commercial and investment context and develop analytical solutions.
  • Experience in energy market forecasting platforms such as Plexos would be highly regarded.
  • An understanding or experience in the energy industry would also be an advantage.

Experience required:

  • Eligibility to work in Australia - visa sponsorship is not offered.
  • A minimum of three years' experience in a similar analytical or energy markets position is required.
  • Ability to present to and capture the imagination of people by providing analytical insights into the energy market.
  • Ability to engage at a Senior Manager level with intermediate written and verbal communication.
