The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals.

The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.


Reporting to the Senior Legal Advisor - Criminal Offence Unit, the Legal Advisor provides legal advice and manages a caseload in relation to the investigation and prosecution of criminal offences under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.

The role will support the legal services division by working collaboratively across all areas of health practitioner regulation and providing legal advice and support to AHPRA and the National Boards and Committees.


This role is full time ongoing, based in our Sydney office.

In this role you will:

  • Provide high quality written and oral legal advice relating to the investigation and potential prosecution of criminal offences, operating in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice relevant to the National Law.
  • Provide legal advice and support to Inspectors, working collaboratively with and supporting other Ahpra colleagues.
  • Work in collaboration with external solicitors on the prosecution of criminal offences under the National Law, within NSW, and across other jurisdictions, attending court from time to time.
  • Where appropriate, conduct investigations of low and moderate risk complaints about alleged offences and exercise statutory powers as an Inspector.
  • Admission as a legal practitioner to any state or territory and hold an unrestricted practising certificate.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare complex correspondence and present legal information to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent legal, analytical, conceptual and investigative skills particularly in relation to analysing evidence and reporting on complex issues.
  • Excellent understanding of criminal law and governance, including a thorough knowledge of criminal procedure rules and the law of evidence, particularly as required in a statutory or regulatory environment.
