The role

The Senior Governance Officer primarily facilitates strategic and operational governance functions within the organisation. Their responsibilities include compiling, publishing, and distributing Council business papers promptly and professionally. They also identify and provide advice on potential risks concerning legal compliance and the Council's reputation. Additionally, they play a crucial role in ensuring adherence to government regulations like the Government Information (Public Access) Act and the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Ensure that appropriate Council systems of corporate governance are operating effectively
  • Develop and administer systems to ensure that the Council meets its legal obligations in respect to governance issues in accordance with the Local Government Act and any other legislation
  • Provide professional advice in respect to governance and associated issues
  • Deliver governance projects and other statutory requirements
  • Maintain various Governance related registers
  • Accountable for the effective management and determination of information requests made in accordance with the Government Information (Public Access) Act
  • Supervise a team of Governance Officers

You will have

  • Tertiary qualifications in Business, management or related discipline will be highly regarded.
  • Previous experience in a similar role preferably in Local Government
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying the provisions of the Local Government Act, Government Information (Public Access) Act, Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act and the Local Government Act and other relevant Local Government policies
  • Experience in the interpretation and application of legislation and statutory requirements
  • Experience in formulation of effective policies and procedures
  • Experience in managing strategic governance projects
  • Proficiency with Windows applications, Microsoft Office and document management applications
  • Sound experience in preparing input for and coordinating the preparation of Council business papers including good working knowledge of InfoCouncil software system
  • Knowledge of Local Government, Council meeting procedures, business systems and responsibilities to various stakeholders
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities to meet deadlines and work under pressure in a multi-functional environment
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills including attention to detail, research and the capacity to prepare reports for Council.

The salary range for this opportunity starts at $108,201 (Grade I, Step1) + 11% super. Salary may be negotiable dependent on skills and experience.
