Newcastle, Australia Flexhive Full time

About Us:

High speed rail will connect Australian regions, cities and communities - delivering more job and lifestyle choices, greater housing options and new economic opportunities.

With a new world-class railway system at its core, the Australian Government's High Speed Rail Authority is planning for a future high speed rail network to connect Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and regional communities across the east coast of Australia.

The first stage connects Newcastle to Sydney - a nationally significant corridor - with a fast, reliable and regular link between the two largest cities in NSW.

Journey times from Newcastle to Sydney will be about an hour, and about 30 minutes from the Central Coast to Sydney or Newcastle - more than twice as fast as current travel.

The Australian Government has allocated $78.8 million to the High Speed Rail Authority to deliver the initial Newcastle to Sydney high speed rail business case before the end of 2024. This includes determining important aspects of the new rail network including the proposed alignment, station locations, the type of train to be used and the estimated cost and timeframe for construction.

The Role:

As EL1 Communications Manager within our newly formed Stakeholder and Communications team, you will play a crucial role in shaping and delivering strategic public affairs and communication strategies that bolster the Authority's reputation. You will also coordinate media, social media, and communications strategies to support the Authority's operations.

This permanent role can be based in Sydney or Newcastle. Flexible working arrangements are on offer, but please note that this is a full-time role and some domestic travel will be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the development and execution of high-quality communications supporting the Authority's initiatives.
  • Provide proactive communication advice, monitor media, prepare materials for public engagements, and respond to media issues.
  • Coordinate and help manage media, community, stakeholder, and industry events.
  • Assist in coordinating public appearances and developing materials for external speaking events.
  • Research and prepare media releases and responses to manage major media and critical issues.
  • Coordinate media and public affairs strategies, responses and campaigns ensuring timely and appropriate responses.
  • Build and maintain close consultative relationships with internal business partners and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and coordinate high-quality communications materials.
  • Embody HSRA values and demonstrate exemplary leadership qualities.

About You:

We are looking for a candidate who will excel in a dynamic work environment and would enjoy the challenge of working on a high profile project.

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of training and experience in media, journalism, public relations, and communications.
  • Minimum seven years' experience in media and/or journalism with demonstrated knowledge of communications and public affairs in a government or political context. Infrastructure experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong project management skills to achieve work goals and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with proven problem-solving abilities requiring critical thinking, creativity, and resourcefulness.
  • Knowledge and experience working on infrastructure projects is desirable.
  • You will be required to travel for media events, stakeholder engagement events, workshops, and meetings.

What We Offer:

  • Opportunity to participate in establishing one of Australia's highest profile infrastructure projects.
  • Capability development opportunities tailored to your career goals.
  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • Support for First Nations people and women's progression into senior leadership roles.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Australian Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline Security Clearance. Candidates must have lived in Australia or have a verifiable background for at least the preceding five years.

How to Apply:

Applications close at 5pm AEST, Wednesday 21st August.

You should submit a current CV (no more than 3 pages) and brief expression of interest (no more than 1 page) outlining how your skills and experience align with the vacancy.
