Henderson, Australia ASC Full time

ASC is Australia’s submarine company. We built the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines, sustain them, and are now delivering their Life of Type Extension to increase the boats’ service lives. We have also been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines – the largest and most complex industrial undertaking in Australia’s history.

Our work is interesting and meaningful, contributing directly to Australia’s national security. We offer rewarding roles that provide the opportunity to grow your career, and the flexibility to balance life and work. A career at ASC is like no other, delivering a deeper purpose we can all be proud of.

About the Opportunity

As a Mechanical Engineer in an In-Service Support role at Henderson, you will be providing technical support to ASC and RAN personnel to maintain the operational capabilities of the Collins Class Submarines (CCSM).

This is a challenging role providing a unique opportunity to broaden your experience across a variety of the traditional and bespoke submarine mechanical systems fitted on-board the CCSM. Your technical advice will include performance and condition assessments, root cause analysis on defects and providing risk assessments for continued operation, potential risk mitigations and repair alternatives. Aside from the traditional office environment, your expertise could be utilised in working environments from hands on support to ASC Trade personnel during scheduled maintenance activities to providing remote advice to RAN personnel on-board operational submarines.

The majority of work will be on-site at the ASC-West facility in Henderson, with some requirement for local travel to HMAS Stirling on Garden Island. The engineering team is a collaborative, multi-discipline group working to ensure the safe and efficient operations and availability of the Collins Class Submarine fleet, which contribute to Australia’s frontline naval capabilities.

Responsibilities

Provide engineering support for sustainment of the Collins Class Submarines during maintenance activities and in-service defects by:

  • Conducting defect investigations, including root cause analysis.
  • Providing technical advice on work scopes for defect rectification.
  • Conducting risk assessments for in-service defects, emerging maintenance and reliability issues in accordance with the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.
  • Reviewing performance and condition data and advising on maintenance requirements.
  • Representing the Engineering team in a Project support role.

About you

  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or similar (Degree must satisfy membership requirements of the Institution of Engineers Australia at MIEAust level).
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and technical knowledge in engineering.
  • Ability to prepare well-structured and concise reports on progress of the investigation / rectification work to various stakeholders.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and to lead a multi-discipline team of engineers and technical personnel.
  • Ability to work effectively alongside trades in defect investigation and rectification.
  • Ability to build and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with stakeholders, as well as the drive to motivate yourself and others, and embrace personal development.
  • Eligibility for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status.

Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.

Benefits

  • Unique and challenging work with a deeper purpose.
