HOPE has been a community service in Western Australia for over a century, providing much needed support to people affected by alcohol and other drugs, mental ill-health, youth justice issues and socioeconomic disadvantage. 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Peer Worker to join the South East FDV Healing Service team The position is full time, fixed term working Monday to Friday.

About the Opportunity 

The FDV Peer Worker will provide peer support and advocacy to persons affected by family and domestic violence. Drawing from their own lived experience, the Peer Worker will offer empathetic and relatable support to clients navigate their challenges. This role involves mentoring, facilitating support groups, and collaborating with the FDV Hub team to ensure comprehensive care.

Requirements of the Role: 

Peer Support and Mentoring:

  • Provide one-on-one peer support to clients, offering empathy, understanding, and guidance based on personal lived experience.
  • Develop trusting and supportive relationships with people, fostering a safe space for them to share their experiences and challenges.
  • Encourage and empower clients to set and achieve personal goals.

Group Facilitation:

  • Facilitate peer support groups and workshops for clients on topics related to family and domestic violence, resilience, and personal growth.
  • Facilitate lived-in experience advisory group:
  • Create a supportive group environment that encourages open discussion and mutual support among participants.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Work closely with the FDV Hub team, including Safety Advocates, Counselors, and Lawyers, to provide integrated services.
  • Participate in case conferences and multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss and coordinate care for clients.
  • Liaise with external agencies, such as schools and youth services, to ensure holistic support for clients.

Education and Outreach:

  • Develop and deliver educational presentations and outreach activities to raise awareness about family and domestic violence and the role of peer support.
  • Provide training and resources to FDV Hub staff and volunteers on the benefits and practices of peer support.

About you:

Education:

  • Certificate IV in Youth Work, Community Services, or a related field is preferred, but not required.

Experience:

  • Personal lived experience of family and domestic violence or related challenges.
  • Experience in a peer support role, particularly with adolescents and young adults, is highly valued.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of the dynamics of family and domestic violence and its impact on young people.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and listening skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and trust with young clients.
  • Group facilitation skills and experience.
  • Basic organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Appointments will be subject to Australian residency/visa, satisfactory National Police check (within 3 months), Working With Children card, Current C or A class driver's license, First Aid Certificate, and suitable work referees.
