The Opportunity
This PhD scholarship is funded as an important part of the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (CEVAW), in the Harnessing Technology for the Prevention of Violence Against Women workstream, led by Professor Asher Flynn.
The PhD project will contribute to the Harnessing Technology for the Prevention of Violence Against Women workstream, which involves researching the nature, pervasiveness, harms and responses to technology-facilitated gender-based violence in the Indo-Pacific region, and the potentials for technology to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.
The successful applicant will join CEVAW and contribute to the workstream, undertaking their own distinct PhD project. The details of the PhD project are open to negotiation, but it will involve a focus on technology-facilitated gender-based violence in the Indo-Pacific.
Undertaking this PhD as part of CEVAW has several advantages. First, the successful candidate will be integrated into an already successful Centre of Excellence that has been funded by the Australian Research Council, where they will have access to a tailored research ethics and training program focused on Indigenous-centred and feminist research principles. Second, they will have access to CEVAW’s network of research and industry leaders, which includes 13 chief investigators at six Australian institutions, 15 partner investigators worldwide and 33 partner organisations, and have cross-discipline supervision opportunities to broaden their research expertise and knowledge. Third, the candidate will have access to funding to support fieldwork, transcription, travel, and conference attendance. Finally, the candidate will benefit from being part of research outcomes from CEVAW, which may include co-authored publications, funded symposium and engagement activities.
CEVAW is the world’s first Centre to tackle the full range of forms of violence against women in Australia and the Indo-Pacific region. CEVAW aims to transform our understanding of the problem by examining the structural drivers that cause and compound violence against women, and pioneering new, evidence-based approaches to inform trajectory-altering practice and policy. CEVAW will generate fundamental knowledge on the causes of violence, the contexts in which it occurs, and the most effective and efficient responses. This interdisciplinary research will be data-driven, Indigenous-centred and co-designed with partners.
CEVAW is headquartered at Monash University; the largest university in Australia which regularly ranks in the top 100 universities worldwide. Monash has a strong and supportive research culture, led by internationally recognised scholars successful in attracting national and international competitive funding. The applicant will be based at the Clayton campus in Melbourne.

Candidate Requirements
The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record in social sciences and/or significant industry experience in gender-based violence contexts. Competence in both quantitative and qualitative research methods is desirable.
In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Honour’s or Master’s degree (both in a relevant field), with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded.

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus. Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.
The successful applicant will be expected to enrol by 3 February 2025 . However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.
