The Victorian Government is upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology and Melbourne’s first dedicated busway. These changes will slash travel times and improve public transport in Melbourne’s east.

Symal is part of the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke, Arcadis and WSP. Our scope of work includes a new interchange connecting the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, major road and bridge upgrades between Burke Road and Tram Road, smart traffic management technology upgrades and new noise protection to meet Victoria’s toughest traffic noise standards. The local community will also benefit from new and upgraded walking and cycling connections, upgrades to Koonung Creek Reserve and revitalised wetlands and open spaces.


The role:

As our Alliance continues to grow, we are looking a GIS Developer to join the Engineering & Design team in a permanent role.

The GIS Developer will be responsible for providing core development of the current BTA GIS platform in line with the project’s objectives, and in support of the GIS Manager / Lead Developer. The role will also involve advanced spatial data management, professional GIS analysis, and the creation of new spatial content relevant to the project.


Your every day:

  • Find solutions to problems and requests from the project that can be solved through the development of the current GIS application or advancement thereof via the provision of new tools and capabilities. 
  • ​Design, develop, and configure web and mobile applications and maintain existing ones at both a technical system level as well as content as required by the project. 
  • ​Work closely and collaboratively with the wider Project stakeholders to maintain the GIS environment such it meets the needs and requirements of the project, identify gaps, and provide technical solutions.
  • ​Work closely and collaboratively with the Survey and Digital Engineering Teams to collaborate in the creation of new workflows, processes, and capabilities required to deliver the project asset information in the GIS environment.
  • ​Form working relationships with project staff as a go-to person for GIS development and analysis in support of the GIS manager and overall outcomes. 
  • ​Manage day-to-day platform development and support in conjunction with the GIS Manager and lead developer.
  • ​Provide high-level GIS analysis and the creation of new spatial content to support the project.
  • Provide data cleansing, translation, and conversion services as required

Who are you?

  • Extensive knowledge of VertiGIS Workflow and Web and its customization capabilities using VertiGIS SDKs like developing custom components and elements using Javascript and React
  • Familiar with ArcGIS Map SDK JavaScript and related APIs
  • Expertise in Python programming, with a strong emphasis on geospatial libraries (e.g., arcpy, GeoPandas)
  • Advanced proficiency in FME form and flow
  • Familiar with working with spatial databases and GIS database design
  • Strong knowledge of ArcGIS Online, automation and administration
  • Being familiar with working with Git and GitHub is beneficial.
  • Problem Solving and troubleshooting mindset
  • Ability to travel to and work from site offices in the eastern suburbs
