The Role

Macquarie Neurosurgery is seeking Unaccredited Neurosurgical Registrars to provide clinical and surgical services and contribute to the development of the unit. This full-time position is not a position recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for training, however it will allow the successful candidates an opportunity to experience surgery in a private University hospital and academic health science centre. The candidates will participate in the weekly education and academic meetings. The successful candidates will also have the opportunity to participate in outreach clinics at various locations in NSW, as well as contribute to educational activities within Macquarie Neurosurgery and Macquarie Hospital.

About You

You will be an aspiring Neurosurgeon who is committed to clinical care, education and research. You will be keen to work in an innovative multidisciplinary environment and be passionate about providing patient centre care. You will have experience working within busy inpatient settings while balancing supervision, teaching and mentoring of junior staff and medical students.

Key Accountabilities include ( ):

Deal proficiently with the full range of neurosurgical cases management, under the supervision and direction of the senior consultant team. Includes all population groups and paediatric neurosurgery, excluding neonatal cases

Technical procedures expected to be performed competently: minor non-surgical procedures (lumbar puncture, lumbar drain, wound management) and surgical procedures commensurate with the Doctor’s level of training. Including opening and closing neurosurgical operations, and key components of neurosurgical operations under direct supervision in learning situations

Provide clinical management and timely treatment of patients [both inpatient and outpatient] delegated by the clinical supervisor[s]and the care of colleagues within the discipline

Supervise and commit to accurate documentation and completions of electronical medical records to reflect clinical decisions, tests, procedures and discharge diagnoses and instructions

Make decisions concerning the patient[s] in consultation with your immediate supervisor[s] and team

Participate in Discipline/Program Morbidity and Mortality meetings and other meetings deemed compulsory by supervisor[s] or the Director of Medical Services.

Ensure compliance with the standards contained within the ACSQHC National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards for accreditation.

Contribute to the development of the unit – both medical and non-medical – through participation in clinical research projects, preparation of articles and/or educational events

Attend all academic meetings chaired by MQN

Chair and prepare Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings on a rotational basis, including Vascular, Neuro-Oncology and Pituitary MDTs

Participate in multidisciplinary clinical supervision, training and education in patient care environments.

Assist, supervise and teach medical and health sciences students, if required.

Participate in relevant college training program and exam preparation.

Complete and provide evidence of Continuing Medical Education and Development
