Chief Engineer

JOB SUMMARY
The Chief Engineer at The Ritz-Carlton,Melbourne will be responsible for overseeing all engineering and maintenance operations, ensuring the highest standards of safety, security, and asset protection across the property. This role will lead the maintenance of the building, grounds, and physical plant while managing the department’s budget, capital expenditure projects, preventative maintenance programs, and energy conservation initiatives. The Chief Engineer will ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and lead the emergency response team for any facility-related issues, ensuring exceptional service and a luxurious guest experience.
Candidate Profile:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED; at least 4 years of experience in engineering, maintenance, or a related professional area, with technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- OR
- A 2-year degree from an accredited university in Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or a related major; at least 2 years of relevant experience in engineering or maintenance, with technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, and plumbing systems.
- Previous experience in a luxury hotel or high-end hospitality setting is preferred.
Key Responsibilities: Managing Property Operations and Engineering Budgets:
- Oversee all aspects of the physical plant, including HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, water treatment, electrical systems, and life safety equipment, ensuring optimal performance and luxury-level service.
- Lead and ensure the effective operation of all engineering systems, guaranteeing that all equipment operates at peak efficiency, safety, and effectiveness.
- Manage the engineering department’s budget, including capital expenditures, operational costs, preventative maintenance, and energy conservation projects.
- Conduct regular evaluations of the facility’s condition and make recommendations for maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to maintain the property’s luxurious standards.
- Supervise day-to-day engineering operations in the absence of the Director of Engineering.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for the property.
Maintaining Property Standards:
- Establish and monitor the property’s preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring all systems and equipment are well-maintained and operating at their highest standards.
- Keep detailed and accurate logs, records, and reports on maintenance, repairs, and facility conditions.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety standards, including fire and life safety procedures.
- Conduct regular property inspections to ensure everything is in pristine condition, identifying areas that require attention or improvement.
Providing Exceptional Customer Service:
- Handle guest issues and complaints regarding the property’s physical environment with tact, efficiency, and grace, ensuring a seamless and luxurious experience.
- Lead by example in delivering exemplary customer service, fostering a positive atmosphere for both guests and employees.
- Empower engineering and maintenance teams to provide exceptional service and maintain Ritz-Carlton’s luxury standards.
Managing Profitability:
- Assist in prioritizing property maintenance needs, ensuring efficient use of resources to deliver the highest quality services while maintaining budget controls.
- Promote an environment of communication and collaboration to ensure that all operational goals are met or exceeded, with a strong focus on guest satisfaction.
- Recognize and celebrate team successes, ensuring employees feel valued for their contributions to the overall guest experience and property performance.
Managing and Conducting Human Resources Activities:
- Supervise and mentor the engineering team, fostering a positive and open work environment that aligns with Ritz-Carlton’s values of excellence, respect, and integrity.
- Provide constructive feedback and development opportunities for team members, helping them grow and succeed in their roles.
- Ensure all employees understand and adhere to the property’s emergency procedures and safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with all hotel policies and procedures, including disciplinary actions, to maintain the Ritz-Carlton standard of excellence.
- Conduct regular training on regulatory compliance, safety procedures, and operational best practices.
Emergency Response and Safety:
- Lead the property’s emergency response team, managing any facility-related issues that may arise and ensuring a quick, efficient, and effective response to emergencies.
- Ensure employees are trained in emergency procedures and safety protocols.
- Act as a liaison for local emergency services when needed, maintaining a coordinated and effective approach to facility safety.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Actively contribute to creating and maintaining an environment that reflects The Ritz-Carlton’s legendary service and hospitality.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure that all maintenance work aligns with the overall guest experience and operational goals of the hotel.
