Who we are

Transgrid is at the forefront of Australia’s clean energy transition. The Energy Transition team develops and delivers initiatives to ensure the secure operation of the NSW power system at up to 100% instantaneous renewable supply, including delivering system security services and supporting the operability of the grid.

The Energy Transition team is heavily focused on delivering solutions to maintain the system strength of the NSW power system. We have identified that a diverse portfolio of solutions is required in the coming decade, including synchronous condensers, up to 5GW of grid-forming batteries, modifications to synchronous machines and contracts with hydro, gas and coal assets.

Our work is varied and creative – there’s no rulebook for what we do.

The opportunity

Are you an electricity system and technology expert, passionate about enabling the rapid transformation of Australia’s electricity system? Do you have a creative mindset, strong communication skills and a keen interest in energy system innovation and new technologies?

We are hiring for a Senior Engineer or Principal Engineer (though being an engineer is not essential) for our Innovation and Energy Transition team. This role is perfect for a strong allrounder – you’re highly technical, a good communicator, a creative thinker and you’d like to grow your leadership skills.  

The role is based in Sydney with working from home arrangements, we can also consider a fully remote/working from home arrangement if you’re based outside of NSW.

  • Guide technical and commercial feasibility assessments of synchronous machine modifications, synchronous condenser services and grid forming batteries for system strength.

  • Lead engagements with ‘non-network’ proponents (including NSW’s largest existing generators and dozens of grid-forming battery proponents) and support commercial negotiations with them.

  • Guide the development of contracts and technical specifications for non-network proponents (including grid-forming batteries), for a new service, system strength, that has rarely been contracted for.

  • You will guide power system modellers (in PSSE and PSCAD) and market modellers (in PLEXOS) to ensure modelling answers the questions we have (you won’t do the modelling yourself).

  • Support the delivery of Transgrid’s System Security Roadmap.

  • Prepare business cases and economic justification to support regulatory approvals and capital investment decisions for infrastructure and services required to deliver the energy transition.

  • Investigate future power system trends and opportunities, such as distributed energy resources, electric vehicles, renewable energy zones, and assess its implications on the transition of the power system.

  • Monitor technological, market and policy developments in the National Electricity Market and beyond, and assesses implications for Transgrid.

  • Lead discussions with stakeholders to build long lasting relationships with government bodies and industry groups, including AEMO and other transmission and distribution operators.

Skills & experience

What we expect from you:

  • Extensive technical experience in the electricity industry, including a strong background with electricity generation and new technologies such as grid-forming batteries.

  • A creative and collaborative approach – eager to guide the energy transition.

  • A strong communicator – willing to speak at industry forums and lead discussions with proponents, as well as being an effective writer.

  • Excellent knowledge of the National Electricity Market including rules, regulations and government policies.

  • Well-developed analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills.

  • Some commercial experience in the electricity industry is desirable.

  • Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline, including Engineering and Commerce degrees.
