About the role:
A highly rewarding opportunity to join Box Hill Institute as one of our casual Auslan Interpreters supporting students in the classroom.
You will provide professional and accurate interpreting to students whose language preference is Auslan in a way which supports a high quality learning experience. This position will interpret in class and on other occasions such as meetings, excursions, enrolment processes and graduation events as required.
The Auslan Interpreter is a member of the Student Life team in the Student Experience Division. This position is responsible for working professionally with Disability Liaison staff, Teachers, Tutors, Learning Support Workers, Customer Service staff and students requiring Auslan interpreting services.
The Student Life Team works cooperatively with students and staff to provide an engaging, positive and supportive learning community – a community with high student retention and success, where the student voice is heard, and which is reflected positively internally and to prospective students and clients. The Student Life Team is an important part of BHI Group’s student value chain providing leadership in the development and delivery of a holistic, outstanding, and distinctive student experience.
This position may be based at either the Box Hill Campus or City Campus but may be offered work at Lilydale and across any campus as required.
About You:
- Demonstrated experience in interpreting between Auslan and English
- Minimum NAATI Certified Provisional or Certified Interpreter level
- Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of people who are Deaf, hard of hearing or who experience barriers to participation and of the values and legislative framework that inform quality disability support services in an educational setting. A developed understanding of how to support students in a professional and respectful manner
- Listens to students and actively seeks to meet their needs. Seeks ways to improve service delivery to meet individual needs and is committed to delivering high quality outcomes for students
- Communicates well with, relates to and sees issues from the perspective of people from a diverse range of cultures, backgrounds and abilities including the Deaf culture. Demonstrates excellent Auslan language communication skills. Pays attention to words, expressions and body language, paraphrases to check understanding and shapes responses based on a range of information
- Committed to the public interest and operating in a manner that is consistent with the BHI Code of Conduct and the ASLIA Code of Ethics. Inspires trust by treating all individuals fairly, with the ability to work within ethical guidelines and maintain strong professional boundaries whilst working with minimum supervision
