DEPARTMENT:

Neurology is a developing specialty within Alfred Health, and recent investment has produced significant growth in this area, particularly with regard to Stroke research and clinical trials. Neurology at Alfred Health consists of inpatient units and a range of specialised outpatient clinics.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The stroke research nurse role is an opportunity to join a dynamic team of stroke clinicians focused on growing and developing The Alfred stroke service. The stroke research nurse will work predominantly with both the current 0.8 EFT stroke research nurse, the stroke clinical fellow, as well as the acute care stroke and rehabilitation consultants to develop a portfolio of stroke research studies across Alfred Health. The successful applicant will also work closely with the stroke multidisciplinary team and stroke nurse educator. The position is 2.5 days a week and the timetable can be flexible but it is envisaged that there will be 5 days a week stroke research nurse cover between the 2 stroke part-time research nurses. It is envisaged that each stroke research nurse will take lead responsibility for specific stroke research studies but be able to support recruitment into all trials. Weekends and out-of-hours research activity is voluntary and ad hoc depending on the trial portfolio but will be remunerated. The primary responsibility of the Stroke Research Nurse is to co-ordinate and facilitate various clinical stroke research trials being conducted by the Alfred stroke team (including Alfred Human Research Ethics Committee or HREC applications). The Research Nurse will do this by ensuring optimal patient assessment, recruitment and retention as well as excellent data collection and management in accordance with Good Clinical Research Practice Standards and adherence to clinical trial protocols. The Stroke Research Nurse is responsible for the recruitment, scheduling, assessment and monitoring of participants enrolled in internationally sponsored clinical trials, at the same time using a range of administration, research, and educational skills to ensure best practice in the management of these trials. The stroke research nurse will also oversee the management of funding for each study with the department PA. The Stroke Research Nurse will participate in the daily workings of the Alfred Stroke Program where appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Essential Registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with the Nursing And Midwifery Board of Australia with a minimum of two year's experience working in the ward or specialty setting.
  • Proven skills in the management of the activities of a multi-disciplinary team who are engaged in clinical research projects to ensure compliance with protocols and overall clinical objectives.
  • Familiarity with the clinical aspects of stroke.
  • Experience or qualifications in Neuroscience, Critical Care (ICU, Cardiac or Emergency Nursing).
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Strong and proven time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice nursing as part of the multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Have good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook.

Desirable:

  • Experience in coordinating clinical research trials within Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
  • Postgraduate qualification in health and/or management or working towards same.
