HOPE has been a community service in Western Australia for over a century, providing much needed support to people affected by alcohol and other drugs, mental ill-health, youth justice issues and socioeconomic disadvantage. 

We have an exciting opportunity for a Day Program Mentor to join the Youth Justice Metro team The position is full time, working Monday to Friday and will be day shifts.

PLEASE NOTE this role is not part of the NDIS/Aged Care/Disability sector. This is a Community Services sector role.

About the Opportunity 

The Day Program Mentor works collaboratively with the coordinator to develop a personalised, strengths-based daily activity plan for each young person residing in the service.   

The Day Program Mentor is responsible for providing support to the individual needs and goals as identified by the young person and to assist them to take responsibility and make healthy life choices until their court date.  

Requirements of the Role: 

  • In conjunction with the Coordinator, develop a personalised, strengths-based daily activity plan with each individual young person based on the goals of the young person and the objectives outlined in their Youth Justice Service Care Plans. 
  • In conjunction with Residential Support Workers, ensure the effective delivery of the Day Program. 
  • Ensure regular conversations occur with each young person regarding their progress and satisfaction in implementing their activity plan. 
  • In conjunction with Coordinator, develop resources and activities for the Day Program, as required. 
  • Provide opportunities for young people to experience healthy lifestyle and recreational activities. 

About you:

  • A high level of expertise and experience attained through previous appointments, service, and/or study, less formal qualifications with specialised skills sufficient to perform at this level, qualifications in more than one discipline, associate diploma with substantial experience, relevant 3-4 year degree with relevant experience.  Qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Youth Work, Mental Health, Community Services or AOD. 
  • Experience working with at-risk young people 
  • Experience and / or willingness to work with young people with challenging behaviours (i.e. has de-escalation training, conflict resolution, behavioural management) 
  • An appropriate degree of confidence to managing difficult situations. 
  • An understanding of and adherence to working within personal and professional boundaries. 
  • Administrative and computer skills. 
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team. 
  • Experience working in culturally appropriate ways. 
  • Commitment to upholding HOPE’s vision, mission, and values 
  • An understanding of factors underlying offending behaviour 
  • Experience in program delivery with young people 
  • A great team player 
  • Ability to communicate well with young people, and an understanding of Aboriginal culture 

Desirable Criteria: 

  • An understanding of factors underlying offending behaviour 
  • Has knowledge of Trauma Informed Practices and Care 
  • Experience of working with or knowledge of issues impacting young people involved within Youth Justice 
  • Knowledge of issues impacting young people in the Youth Justice System  
  • Knowledge of the effects of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder on young people (or willingness to undertake training) 
  • MHFA certification 
  • Current knowledge of and commitment to Equal Opportunity in all aspects of employment and service delivery 
  • An interest in a range of hobbies, e.g., woodwork, craft, gardening, food and cooking 

Appointments will be subject to Australian residency/visa, satisfactory National Police check (within 3 months), Working With Children card, Current C or A class driver's license, First Aid Certificate, and suitable work referee.
