About AFAC

The Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Council (AFAC) is the national council for fire, land management and emergency service authorities in Australia and New Zealand, representing 34 member organisations, comprising permanent, part-time personnel and volunteers, totalling 295,000 firefighters and emergency workers. 

AFAC seeks to amplify the collective capability and capacity of emergency management organisations. Through connection, collaboration, and innovation, AFAC support members to advance the safety and resilience of communities.

AFAC has several business units that facilitate a broad range of activities on behalf of its members. These include professional services, aircraft contract management, cross border deployment of emergency services personnel and other nationally significant activities such as management of the national conference and National Emergency Services Memorial.

The role - Project Accountant

We are looking for an energetic and motivated individual to join our Finance team, ready to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. This position will be reporting directly to our CFO and have close working relationships across the Finance team, internal executive leadership group, human resources, external member agencies and auditors.

As our Project Accountant you will also:

  • Drive continuous improvement in business and administration processes to maximize revenue, improve cost efficiency, productivity, and profitability
  • Ensure shared services businesses meet statutory and contractual reporting obligations 
  • Manage, maintain, and provide timely reporting, implementing automated financial reporting where appropriate
  • Manage payroll function for shared services business entities and interface with human resources
  • Conduct regular cash flow forecasts for effective cash management
  • Manage annual audit process for shared services businesses
  • Provide additional support with finance duties as needed and directed by the CFO.

About you

The successful applicant will possess:

  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications in Finance/Accounting or related areas.
  • Professional accounting qualification (CA/CPA) or working towards this.
    3+ years’ relevant experience with a finance team.
  • Proficiency in Excel and knowledge of financial packages.
  • Experience with process improvement initiatives will be highly regarded.
  • Excellent communication skills to liaise with key stakeholders.
  • Strong organisation skills with the ability to prioritize and meet conflicting deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Can do attitude, good work ethic, quick turnarounds, collaborative with a flexible and proactive approach.
