ABOUT THE ROLE

In partnership with Victoria Police, G4S-operated Police Gaols are the main reception points for people who have been charged by the Police, and people in custody who are required to attend court. The services we provide range from accommodation, escorting people in custody to their court appearance, and 24/7 medical services. All services are designed to ensure the safety and security of people in custody, staff and the community. 

We have several Full-Time Trainee Custodial Officer positions available at the Bendigo Law Courts, with training commencing in January 2025.

As a Custodial Officer working alongside people in challenging situations, a great deal of resilience, maturity, compassion, and empathy is required to promote positive engagement with people in custody and diffuse and manage conflict that may occur. 

It's imperative that people are made to feel safe and supported whilst in our care.

Successful candidates will be responsible for: 

  • Ensuring the welfare of people in court and custody. 
  • Managing and escorting them through the facility and in court and providing security during court hearings
  • Operating the control room and ensuring the safe and secure operation of the Building 
  • Reporting on incidents, occupational health and safety, risk mitigations and intelligence 
  • Searching for people in custody
  • A willingness to be flexible with regard to start and finish times, reasonable additional overtime when courts run late and at times working at other G4S-operated police goals

ABOUT YOU

This particular role and work environment is suited to individuals who have:

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to build rapport with people of all ages from varying backgrounds 
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and negotiation skills 
  • Experience working as part of and contributing towards a close-knit team 
  • Strong written communication with an understanding of report writing 
  • Positive, solutions-focused approach to complex and challenging issues with the ability to think outside the box
  • The capability to meet the physical requirements of the role 
  • Experience in dealing with and respect for confidential and sensitive information
  • The ability to achieve a clearance through a criminal record check (including fingerprints)
  • Hold a current Victorian Working With Children's Check
  • A current Driver's Licence - Full Licence is an advantage
  • Must be available to attend 2 weeks of full-time training in Melbourne CBD
