The Role & The Team:

As an Engineering Specialist (Communications) working on the Aerodrome Platform technology of communication systems, you will be responsible for the technical implementation, sustainment, and enhancements of operational airways systems, ensuring the systems meet agreed technical performance requirements and continue to provide services to industry. Specifically, such systems include voice switching platforms and telecommunications systems providing communication, control and monitoring services to Air Traffic Control, and Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting staff.

The primary system for this position is Airservices Australia’s Audio & Control System, which is employed at all legacy Airservices Australia air traffic control towers and provides voice and airfield monitoring through analogue components and circuitry.

This portfolio of work includes:

  • Perform system design, implementation, performance monitoring, specifying, reporting and analysis and support tasks throughout the system lifecycle in accordance with Airservices safety and system management policies, frameworks, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Apply Systems Engineering and technical oversight throughout the engineering lifecycle, from requirements definition, through design, integration, verification, validation, and support phases of a system for new systems and upgrades to existing systems.
  • Maintain an appropriate level of skills and monitor technology developments in existing and future systems within the Aviation domain.
  • Contribute to engineering reports, specifications, feasibility studies and proposals to determine and recommend changes in the design, performance, or functionality of systems.
  • Manage and control the configuration of systems including hardware, software/firmware, and documentation.

The Aerodrome Platform group in CTEO (Chief Technology Enablement Officer) is responsible for the on-going management, implementation and sustainment of Technology systems that form part of the National Airways System (NAS). Within our remit are systems used across Australia at all airports, aerodromes, and international partners in the aviation industry.

The Person:

The successful applicant will have:

Essential:

  • A degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering or Information Technology from an Australian tertiary institution, or certified equivalent qualification.
  • An understanding of and demonstrated experience applying Systems Engineering practices throughout the system design, verification, and management processes.
  • Experience in the design, development, testing and implementation of robust and reliable telecommunications systems.  This includes the over-arching aspects of quality assurance and configuration management.
  • A High-level knowledge of analogue voice audio components and circuitry, and analogue DC control and monitoring signalling components and circuitry
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder and vendor management.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of tasks and work as a member of a dynamic team, including ability to work under limited direction to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Strong documentation skills with experience in preparing and reviewing solution architecture documents and system design documents, including alignment to strategies and existing initiatives.

Highly Desirable:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in relevant area of engineering in accordance with relevant legislation , Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ)

Desirable:

  • Awareness of Information Security Manual (ISM) and demonstrated experience in adhering to ISM principles and applying ISM controls.
  • Awareness of DO-278A guidelines, software assurance levels and relevant processes and artefacts.
  • Experience in designing, maintaining, and supporting technology systems, in particular:
    • N-tier architectures and distributed systems
    • Real-time systems
    • Message handling
    • Internet technologies
