Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter to join the Casualty team in our Sydney office.

We are seeking an individual who is intelligent, passionate and who is always striving towards excellence. Our expectations are for the teammate to be able to learn new products and have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with all levels and disciplines.

You should be comfortable working closely with actuaries, the Claims team, and underwriters from across the broader team. Good data and file management skills are required. In addition, necessary character, relationship building and negotiating skills to help lead and further build a profitable book of business are of the upmost importance.

The successful candidate will be focused on a positive customer experience, while maintaining sound underwriting discipline. This position is a great fit for a Senior Underwriter looking to expand their responsibilities and underwriting knowledge with an experienced and well-regarded unit within a top global insurance company.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Develop and grow the Casualty book of business which includes primary, umbrella, and excess liability for various classes (e.g., General Casualty, Energy, Transportation, Construction, Products, Life Science, etc.). Establish, develop, and expand broker and customer relationships in the Corporate market segment. Work closely with Claims, Actuarial, Operations and Legal teams to evaluate risk and provide solutions to customers. Have a strong focus on Portfolio Management. Maintain a profitable Renewal book. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

5+ years Liability underwriting experience with strong skill set or interest in navigating predominantly Casualty exposures. A strong underwriting acumen. Existing broker and customer relationships, or the experience and ability to develop strong broker and customer relationships quickly. Ability to work and collaborate within a team environment. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity. Strong communication skills including advanced negotiation, communications, and presentation experience. Degree or equivalent education, and/or strong insurance qualifications.
