John Holland, CPB Contractors and Ghella Joint Venture (JCG) has commenced design and construction work for the Sydney Metro West - Eastern Tunnelling Package (ETP). 

ETP includes the construction of 3.5-kilometre tunnels under Sydney Harbour between The Bays and the Sydney CBD, and the excavation of Pyrmont and Hunter Street stations. This is the final piece in the puzzle to deliver the city-shaping Sydney Metro West project.

The role

The primary purpose of the Control Room Operator is to manage and control the shift underground communication and monitoring strategies to enable safe and efficient operations to occur. The position also provides the focal point for communication within the 3 tunnelling sites from a production and safety perspective.

  1. Monitor and operate control systems at central control room The control room operator is responsible for monitoring and operating various control systems for three construction sites. Systems include the below
    1. Tunnel ventilation systems
    2. Tunnel environmental and atmosphere monitoring
    3. People tracking
    4. Emergency evacuation system
    5. CCTV and site security
  2. Ensure safe and efficient operations: The control room operator is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient operations of the equipment and systems they are monitoring. They should follow standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and industry regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  3. Respond to alarms and emergencies: In case of any alarms or emergencies, the control room operator should promptly respond, troubleshoot, and take appropriate actions to mitigate the situation. This may involve coordinating with other team members, communicating with field personnel, and following emergency response protocols.
  4. Record and report data: The control room operator should accurately record and report operational data, including system readings, alarms, equipment status, and any incidents or abnormalities that occur during their shift. This data is important for analysis, maintenance, and regulatory compliance purposes.

Skills and experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil or Mechanical Engineering
  • Local experience in a control room and or TBM tunnelling environment
  • Ideally, previous experience working for a Tier 1 or 2 Contractor
  • Excellent communication skills of liaising with internal and external stakeholders on a regular basis
