About the role

We are currently seeking a Red Shield Defence Services Representative, on a permanent full-time basis, located in Palmerston, NT.

The representative is a trained specialist and has expertise in recognising and focusing on the spiritual, pastoral and welfare needs of others. As a spiritual practitioner they work in partnership with other professional staff to provide holistic support to veterans, both currently and ex-serving.

The representative’s role may include the provision of welfare and pastoral support. It also may include the facilitation of support from other faith groups as appropriate, it may also include provision of religious services including chapel services, weddings, funerals or Bible studies after appropriate approvals have been given.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provides spiritual and pastoral care, encouraging people to explore their spirituality and move forward in their personal faith journey. This includes one-on-one pastoral or spiritual conversations.
  • Collaborates with the local corps and mission expression personnel and Defence chaplains to create faith pathways. This will include opportunities to connect to a local corps or other faith communities
  • Provides a pastoral response, in conjunction with specialist formal debriefing, to those impacted by critical incidents
  • Conducts and facilitates Christian ceremonies and services as required according to the rites of The Salvation Army
  • Assist Defence personnel or other stakeholders in understanding The Salvation Army theology, mission, and culture. Encourage the use of a sacred space that is provided for the holistic, spiritual, and religious needs of those we serve
  • Where applicable, as a professional spiritual practitioner, the representative attends and contributes to meetings as requested
  • Conducts and facilitates Christian ceremonies and services as required and directed according to the rites of The Salvation Army

Qualification requirements for the role include:

  • Diploma of Chaplaincy or Foundations course (mandatory)
  • Relevant qualifications in theological studies (preferred)
  • Positive Lifestyle Program (PLP) Facilitator training (mandatory)
  • Mental Health First Aid (mandatory)
  • Meets the yearly credentialing requirements of the Territorial Chaplaincy Support Unit (TCSU) to be registered as a TSA Chaplain
  • Regular attendance at a Christian place of worship
  • Working With Children Check
