The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and driven Digital Journalist/Editor to join SBS News in our digital newsroom on a full-time basis until end of June 2025. 

We’re looking for someone who shares our vision and cares about showcasing our distinctive content across all our digital platforms. We care about reaching all Australians - with a strong mandate for news stories that support, celebrate and appreciate the diversity of Australia’s multicultural society.

We are looking for a dedicated and skilled reporter and editor to join the team on a rotating roster to create and edit content for SBS News' Digital platforms. This is a 12-month contract role that will involve shift work.

This role will see you:

  • Rostering into reporter shifts, pitching and writing original content, including news coverage, features and explainers
  • Conducting thorough news gathering with a strong awareness of trends, national and international news
  • Commissioning stories and guiding journalists to cover the most crucial stories of the day
  • Commissioning visually rich assets to complement stories, and bringing forward ideas for innovative coverage
  • Covering breaking news and sending app alerts
  • Using data and analytics tools to help inform editorial choices

About you

Ideally, you will:

  • Be a confident and creative writer with a strong eye for detail and the angles that matter to our audience.
  • Have an understanding of media law, flawless subbing, and strong headline writing skills.
  • Be committed to maintaining our editorial integrity and maximising our publishing reach.
  • Have demonstrated experience as a digital editor and journalist for news titles.

You should also bring:

  • A keen interest in what’s happening in the world to develop storytelling in new and innovative ways to reach and engage wider audiences.
  • A passion for providing news for all Australians
  • A hunger to understand and share new developments and trends in journalism and digital media.
  • Good energy to collaborate across the newsroom to create unique and distinctive content that meets deadlines.
  • News happens around the clock and you should be willing and able to undertake hours that may involve early mornings, evenings and weekends.
