About the Role - Exciting New Role

 

The Diesel Mechanic plays an integral role in South Australia to ensure our vessels are operating at optimum levels. Responsible for the two Kangaroo Island Ferries, and the beautiful Murray Princess based in Mannum. In 2025, we are welcoming 2 brand new ferries to our KI service. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced diesel mechanic to join our team in a newly created role to support our operation. This role will be based in Cape Jervis or Penneshaw with regular travel to Mannum (to be determined).

 

Reporting to the Shore Based Maintenance Supervisor the Diesel Mechanic is responsible for ensuring efficient maintenance and repairs are undertaken for our vessels. You will be required to confidentially repair and troubleshoot and manage issues as they arise. This role will ensure all marine compliance is adhered to, diagnosing and rectifying engineering issues, undertaking preventative maintenance schedules.

 

About You

 

A confident and experienced Diesel Mechanic with minimum 2 years’ experience, preferably in the Marine industry you will have sound knowledge of diesel engines and advanced knowledge of diesel fitting and turning, hydraulics, electrical and air conditioning systems. A trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical with comprehensive knowledge of marine vessel machinery, especially marine diesel engines will be essential. A restricted electrical license will compliment your experience and skills as will a MED1 certificate.

 

You will need to work autonomously and build relationships with the ferry crew and external contractors. If you are self-motivated, results-driven, organised, and continuous improvement focused this role could be for you. Some out-of-hours work may be required for breakdowns therefore living on or around the Fleurieu Peninsula will be highly beneficial and TOIL benefits will apply.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the Company’s machinery for reliability & efficiency.
  • Strong verbal interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Maintain the Vessel Safety Management Systems and have a MEX User Certificate
  • Ability to influence positively
  • Show initiative, systematic reasoning, results-focused and self-driven
  • Promote a safe working environment and coordination of risk management processes

Key Qualifications:

  • Working within confined spaces ticket (beneficial)
  • Working at heights (beneficial)
  • Forklift licence
  • Dogman/rigger
  • Drivers’ licence/HR
  • MED 1 or 2
