Sydney, Australia Westpac Institutional Banking Full time

Principal Engineer – 52620

  • Permanent
  • Sydney

How will I help?

Working within Technology, Westpac Institution Banking (WIB) on the highly strategic Westpac One Core cash management project, the Principal Engineer function plays an important role in the development of a new portal/api, application, data and security platform for the banks Corporate and Institutional clients.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing technical input to the strategic direction of technology investments.
  • Identifying & assisting in mitigating the impact of technology dependencies on solution delivery.
  • Developing & implementing technology solutions in line with best practices and to agreed timeframes.
  • Engaging with Architects, Consultants, Infrastructure and Security Specialists to provide a key link between the technical needs of the business and the solution design.
  • Participating in Westpac Engineering communities, and providing constructive feedback to platform teams

What’s in it for me?

You’ll play a significant part of the future of a business that has been around for over 200 years. Our purpose is to create better futures together. So, we’ll back you in the development of your career, internal career prospects, and flexible working. You’ll also keep learning to grow your career, backed by a fantastic team of people with a can-do, supportive structure. Whatever shape your family takes, we offer generous paid and unpaid parental leave for your nominated primary and support carers. This includes leave to organise adoptions, surrogacy, and foster care arrangements. And we continue to pay your super contributions while you take all the time you need to get your new family settled.

What do I need?

To be successful in this role you will have strong engineering experience across various technology stacks, with a comprehensive understanding of all relevant concepts. Your background will include working on significant transformation programs, preferably within the banking sector. You should feel at ease discussing topics with engineers, ranging from RDBMS to modern cloud and NoSQL databases. Equally, you will be able to transition seamlessly into conversations about Java and microservices and engage with another squad on the merits of react.js versus next.js.

While you may not be coding full-time, you will be someone who still enjoys coding in your personal time and likely has experience as an architect at some point in your career. Your extensive experience will be paired with a humble attitude; you will know how to listen to your talented team, recognising when to let them take the lead, when to redirect their efforts and when to halt a particular approach. You will play a key role in developing our “engineering practice,” understanding that engineering encompasses design and test, not just coding.

In your past you would have served as a technical lead, promoted beyond coding due to your exceptional communication and leadership skills and your ability to see the bigger picture. You will be able to guide the engineering teams toward a focus on continuous improvement, quality and consistency. You will drive the teams journey on co-pilot.

We are looking for professionals with the below skills/experience:

  • Java
  • Javascript/react.js/node.js/next.js
  • RESTful APIs
  • Kubernetes
  • Eventing technologies, Kafka/MQ
  • devOps (Terraform/Jenkins)
  • AWS Data technologies (DynamoDB, Aurora, Neptune)
  • Cloud

We are looking for individuals with the below soft skills/experience:

  • Continuous Improvement
  • Ability to work within a highly skilled team as a team member.
  • Confidence without the ego
  • Keen to challenge the status quo
  • Proactive
  • A focus on delivering business value above all

What’s it like to work there?

We are a collaborative team of passionate people with a shared ambition to make a difference for our customers, our communities and each other. At Westpac, making a difference means creating impact, unlocking our own and each other’s passions, and transformative success stories to create better futures together.

As well as competitive remuneration and a great culture, joining the Westpac family gives you access to a wide range of employee benefits to help you manage your priorities - whether that means family life, work/life balance, ambition to grow or all the little perks in between.

We’ll empower you to shape your career path.  Through personalised upskilling, mentoring, and training opportunities, you’re in control of where you start and how you’ll grow.

As an equal opportunity employer, we are proud to have created a culture and work environment that values diversity and flexibility – and champions inclusion.
