Life at Mission Australia

When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we stand together with anyone who needs us, for as long as they need us. Find out more about us and our purpose.

Your Opportunity

The STAR Program is a culturally safe, client-centered, trauma-informed, and evidence-based program, tailoring case work and group activities to the needs of local children and young people. By integrating with local community youth services and using traditional cultural knowledge and healing practices, STAR enhances access to various forms of individual assistance, fostering better personal outcomes and connections to family, community, culture, and country.

We are seeking an Indigenous Mentor to provide case management support to young individuals involved in or at risk of entering the youth justice system. This role primarily focuses on assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth and their families. As part of the STAR program, your work will be crucial in reducing the risk of reoffending and enhancing community safety. Additionally, you will offer support and guidance to help clients strengthen their connections to family, community, and cultural heritage.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Respond to client and family referrals across Atherton, Mareeba, and Herberton.

  • Conduct outreach services for approximately 10 clients and their families.

  • Collaborate with young people and families to develop holistic, strength-based support plans using SMART goals.

  • Lead group workshops and coaching sessions, including the transformative 16-week "Deadly Me" program.

  • Provide continuous support and positive engagement to help young people achieve their goals.

Requirements for Success

  • Diploma in Community Services or equivalent qualifications/experience.

  • Experience working with diverse and disadvantaged people, including Indigenous communities.

  • Strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and contemporary issues.

  • Excellent listening and engagement skills, with the ability to build and maintain trust.

  • Effective written communication and basic case note documentation skills.

  • Strong organisational and time management abilities.

  • Current Queensland Drivers Licence.

  • Valid QLD Blue Card.

We are strongly encouraging people who identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander to apply.

Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.

Our culture

Our innovative and inclusive culture will ensure you feel valued at Mission Australia as you help Australians in need and develop in your career.

We’re committed to the safety and wellbeing of each other and the people we serve. We recognise and respect diversity. So, whoever you are, if you’re skilled and actively support our purpose and values, you would be welcome at Mission Australia. Find out more about a career with Mission Australia.

Your benefits

  • Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference

  • Free external, confidential counselling and access to chaplaincy support

  • Volunteering opportunities
