About Us :
Katherine Town Council is the Municipal Council for Katherine, NT. Providing services to the Katherine Community relating to rates, roads, infrastructure, animal control, waste management and other core essential services.
At the heart of the Big Rivers region is Katherine, the fourth largest township in the Northern Territory. Outside of Darwin and Palmerston Local Government Areas, Katherine is the next major regional centre closest to the Port of Darwin; the only major multimodal port located in Northern Australia and Australia’s gateway to the Asia Pacific.
Katherine is located at a critical crossroads point for Northern Australia and the top end, connecting Perth to Darwin from the west and Adelaide to Darwin through the north/south highway and rail corridor. Katherine services the wider region with access to education and medical services.
Around 8,000 people live in the Katherine municipality. The local RAAF Airbase at the Katherine suburb of Tindal adds around 2,000 to this figure making it over 10,000 people living and working in Katherine.

About You :
- Current NT Drivers Licence
- Relevant Certificate qualifications
- Sound written and verbal communication skills
- Sound keyboard and computer skills
- Experience in Local Government
Position Summary :
This position reports directly to the Waste Management Facility Site Coordinator and is responsible for the efficient and accurate operation of Council’s Weighbridge operating system, and the general cleanliness of the Weighbridge area.
Key Requirements :
- Demonstrated ability to meet the positions key responsibilities.
- Relevant personal attributes including possession of customer service skills, maturity, enthusiasm and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- Good communication skills with the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with people from all backgrounds
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team.
- Experience in working with cash and balancing monies.
- Experience in Microsoft Officer products and packages
- Ability to understand various legislations, statutory obligation and Council policies in order to make informed decisions
- Extensive knowledge and skill gained through on-the-job training
- Minimum experience of 2 years in similar or related role
- Experience in Local Government
Job Responsibility :
Position's Key Responsibilities
1. Weigh in and out all commercial vehicles by entering data and ensuring vehicle registration details are kept.
2. Sign up new clients ensuring new account application forms are completed.
3. Receive and balance cash payments for commercial waste and sale of used goods.
4. Direct and inform clientele in the use of a refuse site in a friendly and helpful manner.
5. Produce weekly reports for the Corporate & Community Development Department.
6. On a daily basis maintain the cleanliness of the office including cleaning of the toilet, floor, and windows both inside and outside.
7. Inspection of vehicle/trailer loads, paying particular attention to commercial and industrial waste including recyclable materials and other non-licensed wastes.
8. Communicate with the landfill operator by radio as required.
9. Using correct procedures document the disposal of asbestos and document the disposal of Police sensitive materials.
10. Advise clients of Site Safety Rules (issue Visitor Safety Card if required).
11. Responsible for the completion of regularly occurring tasks with general guidance on a daily basis. May supervise work or provide on-the-job training, based on their skills and/or experience, to employees of the same of lower levels.
12. Other responsibilities as shall be reasonably associated with or incidental to the above responsibilities or as shall, in the course of the employment, be agreed between the parties as being or forming part of the duties.
Organisational Responsibilities
1. Ensure compliance with Workplace Health and Safety requirements. Comply with workplace procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control. Participate in activities associated with the management of workplace health and safety. Identify and report health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, property damage and mishaps at the workplace.
2. Assist in the implementation of the Katherine Town Council’s Local Counter Disaster Sub-Plan in the event of a disaster.
3. Ensure incumbent is dedicated to servicing our community and will listen to and proactively respond to their needs;
4. Foster sustainable, honest relationships with the community and stakeholders
5. Perform and deliver results that align with organisations strategic direction and serve our community;
6. Work in accordance with Council’s Vision and Mission statement.
7. Provide excellent customer service through incoming telephone calls, email and front counter enquiries
Level of Responsibility
Authority & Accountability
Completion of basic tasks involving the utilisation of a range of basic skills under established practices and procedures. Work is monitored under supervision either individually or in a team environment.
Judgement & Problem Solving
Judgment is limited to the tasks to be performed and may involve the use of a limited range of tools, techniques and methods within a specified range of work. An employee may resolve minor problems that relate to immediate work tasks.
Specialist Knowledge & Skills
Obtained through on-the-job training and workplace induction training. May include off-the-job training through accredited short courses.

Not required at this level
Interpersonal Skills
Limited to basic communications with other staff and possibly with the public.
Qualifications & Experience
Completion of Year 10 and/or an appropriate labour market program or similar work/skills.
