About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Naval Architecture Discipline Lead, you will provide essential engineering support to ensure the safe and efficient operations and availability of the Collins Class Submarine fleet, which contribute to Australia’s frontline naval capabilities.

This permanent, full-time role will provide opportunity to work on our maintenance based activities in Henderson, WA. Integral to this role will be your ability to interact and communicate effectively with a diverse group of professionals, provide problem solving solutions and have the confidence and professional demeanour to influence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for sustainment of the Collins Class Submarines during maintenance activities and in-service defects.
  • Development and review of engineering documentation such as docking calculations, stability calculations, structural calculations, work instructions, defect assessments, repair procedures, test procedures and engineering reports.
  • Develop work scope and risk assessments for in-service defects, trials, emerging maintenance and reliability issues requiring knowledge of engineering fundamentals and the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.
  • Produce safety and technical risk assessments in accordance with the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.
  • Key areas of knowledge include submarine design, trim and stability, shock and vibration, dockings, hydrostatics and general structural engineering.

About you 

  • Bachelor of Engineering, Naval Architecture or similar (Degree must satisfy membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia at MIEAust level).
  • Experience conducting Naval Architecture analysis within a heavy engineering, shipbuilding or defence industry.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and work with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technical personnel.
  • Experience with working through integration issues with stakeholders to find acceptable solutions.
  • Ability to build and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with stakeholders, as well as the drive to motivate yourself and others, and embrace personal development.
  • Eligibility for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status.

Desirable competencies and experiences – not mandatory

  • Current Baseline or NV1 Clearance.
  • Experience with naval maintenance and/or operation of maritime systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Defence Seaworthiness Management System (DSWMS) and its application to Engineering Delegations and Risk Levels.
  • Knowledge of submarine and pressure hull design.
  • Knowledge of operating in Submarines or the Shipbuilding engineering environment.
  • Experience in providing technical repair instructions and /or overseeing work conducted.

Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.
