PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

You probably think that working for an online travel agency that manages hundreds of millions of bookings per year, or working for an airline company that operates hundreds of thousands of flights per year must bring their fair chair of challenge. If so, just try to realize the scalability, resiliency and geographical distribution challenges that are behind the system that powers 150+ airlines, hundreds of websites, tens of airports, or thousands of hotel properties. Just one fact to illustrate: at peak times, Amadeus processes more than 17,000 transactions per second (1+ billion transactions per day), with an average system response time of less than 0.3 seconds.

The DBaaS (Database-as-a-Service) department aims at providing Oracle database administration expertise and operational support to applications within Amadeus, in a follow-the-sun organisation. Amadeus’ leading presence in Asia, as well as the criticality of Oracle database infrastructure for the company, makes the Sydney team a key asset for expert support in both day-to-day activities and critical incidents.

The Oracle Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for ensuring the deployment, maintenance, performance, integrity and security of the Oracle database platform, on behalf of the applications relying on it. He / She / They assist(s) the application Software Reliability Engineers on all aspects relating to Oracle operations, partners closely with System Engineering colleagues regarding Linux-related activities, as well as Research & Development and Product Management counterparts for offering best possible database experience & performances.

Main Responsibilities:

  • ​​Plan & deploy database clusters, supporting multi-Terabytes workloads, with a strong emphasis on high-availability and fault-tolerance (including multi-site high-availability, whenever required).

  • Ensure that storage, archiving, as well as backup & recovery procedures are operating correctly, including in disaster recovery situations.

  • Maintain & upgrade database clusters, to comply with appropriate patch level, kernel patching and security standards (PCIDSS / SOC / ISO27K compliancy and vulnerability remediation).

  • Monitor performances and manage database parameters’ tuning, to provide best-of-class experience.

  • Investigate operational incidents, debug problems and provide solutions for recovery, in 24x7 operational conditions.

  • Operate databases on premises as well as on Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure.

  • Contribute with colleagues to the on-call roster.

  • Write and maintain database documentation, platform specifications and procedural descriptions.

  • Work closely with database development & product management team, for continuous improvement of the Oracle automation & ecosystem based on operational return-of-experience.

Relevant Experience:

  • 5+ years managing Oracle database technologies, in a highly available enterprise environment (24x7). Field experience in supporting critical production workloads.

  • Hands-on exposure on latest Oracle (19c, 23ai) engine versions and features.

  • Experience with Oracle database upgrades and data migration techniques (Dataguard, Golden Gate, Datapump, etc.).

  • Experience in working with Linux operating system.

  • Experience with database automation & scripting skills (Ansible, Python, shell, etc.).

  • Knowledge of release management process and tools, such as Git.

  • Experience / certification with Microsoft Azure or another public Cloud provider would be a plus.

  • Operational exposure to another database technology such as MySQL (8.0+), MariaDB (10.x+) and / or Microsoft SQL Server (2016+) would be a plus.

  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) would be a plus.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to collaborate with DBA colleagues, as well as to work independently.

  • Proactive mindset in mitigating / avoiding foreseeable issues.

  • Ability to work in multinational and multicultural environments.

Qualification

  • A Bachelor or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.

  • A certification regarding relational database(s) and / or programming would be a plus.
